This substrate has been specially prepared to provide the perfect blend of organic top soil with soft play-pit sand to mimic your tortoise’s natural habitat.

Our substrate is a tried and tested mix for the breeds of tortoise we sell here at HappyTortoises.

It will also help simulate humidity levels more closely than other substrates available.

We currently stock substrate mixes for:

  • Leopard tortoises

  • Indian Star tortoises (also suitable for Burmese Star tortoises)

  • and Mediterranean spur-thighed (“Greek”) tortoises (also suitable for other Mediterranean species of tortoise such as Horsfields, Hermanns and Marginated).

Directions:

  • Spread substrate over the bottom of the tortoise table (soil depth: approx. height of the tortoise, e.g 1-2" deep for hatchlings/juveniles)

  • Spot-clean daily and remove any soiled substrate

  • Change substrate completely every 4-6 weeks

  • Lightly mist substrate daily to make slightly damp as this will help maintain humidity levels and microclimates

  • Avoid making substrate too wet to avoid health problems

  • Do not allow soil to dry out and become dusty
