Did you know that there are several castles in Ohio? (It’s true. Check out our previous castle articles here and here.) While you can’t explore inside all of them, we thought it would be a great idea to create a road trip that features the castles you can tour inside and out. So grab your family and friends, gas up the car and take a long-weekend trip to see some of the most impressive castles in Ohio.
The total trip takes a little more than 11 hours of drive time round-trip, so you can take the trip within 3 days and 3 nights. (Three of the castle stops provide overnight accommodations.) It’s designed in a loop, so you can start with the castle nearest you. We’ve included a link to the Google Map here.

This elaborate country estate in Akron is one of the largest homes in the U.S. An accredited museum of the American Alliance of Museums, this estate is open to the public for tours and other events and features five historic buildings, eight gardens and 70 acres. Several different tours are offered each season to cater to your curiosity. Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens is located at 714 N Portage Path, Akron, OH 44303.

Located in Loudonville, this lovely little getaway features gorgeous suites, murder mystery dinners and other amenities sure to make you feel like the king/queen of this whimsical castle in the middle of the forest. Recently, the castle has underwent various renovations and improvements after appearing on an episode of Gordon Ramsay's "Hotel Hell." At Landoll's Mohican Castle, there are a total of 11 suites, varying in features and price. You'll find this magical getaway at 561 Twp. Rd. 3352, Loudonville, OH 44842.
Located in Logan County are two chateaux style castles with Gothic design built for two brothers with a love of all things dramatic. Mac-A-Cheek is now a private, family-owned museum that features more than 200 years of Ohio history than you can explore via self-guided tours. Be sure to call ahead for hours of operation before planning a tour. The Mac-A-Cheek Castle is located at 10051 Township Road 47, West Liberty, OH 43357. Its sibling, Mac-O-Chee Castle, is located at 2319 State Route 287, West Liberty, OH 43357. This one has recently been purchased by a private party, however, so you will have to admire its architecture from the comfort of your car.

Also known as the Loveland Castle, this lovely little medieval structure was built by hand — brick by brick — by one man, Sir Harry Andrews. Today it is open for the public to view, and it is operated by modern day knights. The Loveland Castle Museum is located at 12025 Shore Rd., Loveland, OH 45140.
If you’ve ever longed for a Medieval experience (complete with many of the comforts of home,) you’ll definitely want to check out Ravenwood Castle. This lovely little Medieval structure is tucked away in the scenic Hocking Hills in New Plymouth. You can choose to stay in a castle room or a Medieval Village Cottage. You can even camp in a gypsy wagon or stay in a cabin in the Huntsman's Hollow out back. This unique getaway is located at located at 65666 Bethel Rd., New Plymouth, OH 45654.

One of the best examples of Gothic Revival style architecture in Ohio, this historic (and beloved) home in Marietta is open to the public for tours and other events. Be sure to call ahead to schedule a group tour. The Castle is located at 418 Fourth StreetMarietta, OH 45750.

Ohio castles are full of history and charm, but they're relatively few and far between. After all, our state has an impressive 44,825 square miles of landscape, but only a handful of castles. When one thinks of castle, it's impossible not to imagine a pleasant fairytale landscape to accompany said edifice. Ohio is full of towns that are downright picturesque and somewhat provincial. Medina, Ohio has a few castle-like features, and it feels like a town from an old school train set. Put-In-Bay is an island city that many travelers have nicknamed the Key West of Ohio, thanks to its tourist-friendly culture, scenic shoreline, and killer sunsets. Port Clinton conjures up images of quaint New England fishing villages, and Gallipolis has history that predates the founding of the state. No matter which small town you visit, you will find that Ohio communities have much to offer.
What are the best man-made attractions in Ohio?
Human hands have crafted some remarkable things over the years, and many of those structures have transformed the local landscape. The Cleveland Cultural Gardens are straight out of international parks, offering visitors a view of landscaping that's unique to each respective culture. The Temple of Tolerance is another incredible man-made attraction that's almost unbelievable... and it is made largely out of recycled pieces of scrap!
