The “magic” baby hold: Doctor claims it will calm your baby in seconds (2024)

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) –A new technique promises to calm your crying baby in seconds. It’s called “the hold” and a California doctor promises it works like magic. Many parents feel the struggle: When you just can’t get your fussy baby to calm down. But is it really as easy as it looks?

For new moms and dads, the first few months of parenting can be a challenge.California Pediatrician, Dr. Robert Hamilton wants to change that. He said, “I have utilized a method that I call, “the hold” which is very helpful in calming children.”

His method claims to calm the babies within seconds. His instruction video, which went viral with 14 million views, on YouTube, shows you how.

-First, fold the baby’s arms across the chest.

-Secure the arms and hold the chin with one hand, while using your dominant hand to hold the baby’s bottom.

-Then gently rock the baby at a 45-degree angle for some instant calm.

Every move is meant to be very gentle.

For new parents CJand Danielle Ullrich, when it comes to baby Evelyn, they were willing to try anything.

The technique works best on babies up to 2 to 3 months old, after that, they’re too heavy to hold in the position.Evelyn might be a little big at 4 months old, but when her parents tested it on her, it at least worked temporarily.

Danielle Ullrich said she’ll be trying this at home. She said, “Whenyour baby is screaming, especially at 2 in the morning, I think you try anything really!”

We checked in with Buffalo Pediatrician Dr. Steven Lana on whether “the hold” is a hoax or really “magic.” He is the Managing Partner with Delaware Pediatrics. He said, “It makes a baby feel like like they’re in the womb, so it’s similar to the techniques that we have used up until now.”

Dr. Lana taught “the hold” to new mom Robert Callocchia, and her son, 5-day old Brandt.

As a second time parent, Roberta is happy to try whatever comes her way. she said, “It’s really nice to have another technique to try and get your baby to calm down. It can be frustrating when they’re crying so much.”

And magic baby hold or not, both sets of parents tell us crying is just part of the gig. They saythe late nights and lack of sleep are well worth it. CJ Ullrich said, “When you get that smile, you get home after a long day, and she just smiles at you, it just absolutely melts your heart, It’s the most unbelievable thing I could have ever imagined.”

Doctors say its not a full proof plan and may only work on your baby up to two months old.
