What do the ever-changing restrictions mean for the environment?
Last year we discussed the rise in cases of fly-tipping and littering in public places due to lockdown restrictions – but what are the long-term effects should this continue?
Vandalism
- Cost of repair– unattended to, vandalism can incur large costs.
- Danger to community– often vandalism that gets out of control can lead to incidents where people are put in extreme danger.
- Safety of residents– people living in an area subject to vandalism may find themselves feeling unsafe in their homes.
Littering
- Aquatic life – litter dumped in parks can often affect the appearance of the area but more crucially, a lot of litter can also end up in ponds where aquatic life can choke or become entangled in items or be affected by poorer water quality.
- Road accidents– drivers trying to avoid litter on the street can often cause accidents due to swift movements when driving.
- Fire hazards– large amounts of litter can become a fire hazard leading to much more severe circ*mstances.
Fly-tipping
This unauthorised dumping of waste poses threat to humans, animals and the environment.
- Spread of diseasethrough animals is a common result of fly-tipping as local water/food supplies can become contaminated.
- Hazardous chemicalsfrom waste can cause long-term damage to the soil beneath it and can also be poisonous for animals and humans. This type of waste is often non-biodegradable and must be removed manually.
- Rodent infestation –the dumping of waste can attract rats and other vermin.
It is therefore important to consider how you manage these situations and control them before long-term effects take over your community. Clean & clear, biohazard clean up and pest control are just some of the services we offer at SPS. Get in touch today to discuss your requirements.
