The ideal home for your hamster (2024)

The right cage for your hamster

In the wild, hamsters make burrows, climb and walk for miles each day, so their living space needs to be large enough to allow them to behave as naturally as possible. Most hamster cages sold in shops aren’t big enough to even meet a hamster’s most basic needs, so instead, we recommend providing them with a much larger space, such as an extra-large cage, glass tank, or home-made enclosure. Wherever you choose to house your hamster make sure it has the following:

  • A large, usable floor area with plenty of space for exploring - there isn’t a lot of evidence to say exactly how big a hamster cage should be but the ‘Veterinary Association for Animal Welfare’(based in Germany) states a minimum cage size of 100x50cm
  • Places to climb such as branches, ladders or shelves
  • A deep enough solid base to accommodate 25cm (10 inches) of suitable bedding for burrowing, sleeping and storing food – read more about suitable bedding for hamsters below
  • Nest boxes to sleep and hide in – read more about nest boxes below
  • A secure lid and doors – hamsters are fantastic escape artists!
  • Toys to keep them entertained – read more about hamster enrichment below

  1. Size of Living Space: In the wild, hamsters engage in activities like burrowing, climbing, and walking for miles. The article rightly emphasizes the importance of providing hamsters with a large living space that allows them to exhibit these natural behaviors. The 'Veterinary Association for Animal Welfare' in Germany suggests a minimum cage size of 100x50cm, highlighting the need for ample room for exploration.

  2. Climbing Opportunities: Hamsters enjoy climbing, and the article suggests incorporating elements like branches, ladders, or shelves in their living space. This not only adds variety to their environment but also addresses their instinctual need to climb and explore.

  3. Solid Base and Bedding: A deep, solid base is essential to accommodate a sufficient amount of bedding (at least 25cm or 10 inches). This bedding serves multiple purposes, including providing a comfortable surface for burrowing, sleeping, and storing food. It aligns with the natural instincts of hamsters to create cozy nests.

  4. Nest Boxes: Hamsters need private spaces to sleep and hide. The inclusion of nest boxes in their living space fulfills this requirement. These boxes offer a secure and secluded area for hamsters to retreat to, promoting a sense of safety and well-being.

  5. Security Measures: Hamsters are known for their escape artist skills. To ensure their safety, the article recommends a secure lid and doors for their enclosure. This precautionary measure prevents hamsters from escaping and encountering potential dangers in the surrounding environment.

  6. Enrichment Toys: Recognizing the need for mental stimulation, the article suggests providing toys to keep hamsters entertained. Enrichment is crucial for their well-being, and toys can range from tunnels to chewable items that cater to their natural instincts and prevent boredom.

By incorporating these concepts into the hamster's living space, owners can create an environment that not only meets their pets' basic needs but also promotes a happy and healthy life. If you have any specific questions or need further details on any aspect of hamster care, feel free to ask!
