10 Best Bosses and Enemies of 2022

Plenty of strong and memorable opponents cropped up across 2022's video games, but only a select few could stay in the conversation.

However, one of the good, old-fashioned ways to make a boss enemy seem as intimidating as epic an opponent as possible is simply to make them absolutely massive. Some of the biggest foes in video gaming history are also some of the most well-recognized boss enemies ever seen. Gamers have become accustomed to having to take down enemies much bigger than their character over the years.

7 Malus (Shadow of the Colossus)

The 7 Biggest Video Game Bosses of All Time, Ranked by Size (3)

It only makes sense for a game about traversing a huge, empty world where huge giants rule that one of them would be one of the largest bosses in video game history. Malus is by far the largest of the giants that players have to face, rising at over double the size of any other colossus that stands upright throughout the game, which is still beautiful to behold today.

While there have been bigger bosses in other video games, the size of Malus was plenty enough to completely dwarf players and make them feel like the task of bringing him down was pretty much insurmountable. Malus rose at somewhere between 160 and 210 feet in height, making him at least 25 times larger than a tall man. Malus may not be the largest of the colossi overall, but since others don’t stand upright, he definitely feels in-game to be the largest of them.

6 The HIVE Mind (Dead Space)

The 7 Biggest Video Game Bosses of All Time, Ranked by Size (4)

The final boss of Dead Space is hard to define in terms of size. The HIVE Mind, also known as a Nexus Necromorph on a massive scale. This huge body was often hidden inside a crater, but alone the small pieces that were ever actually seen made for over several stories tall, prompting belief that the whole body would dwarf almost anything.

The HIVE Mind is just one of the massive, deadly creatures seen in the Dead Space franchise, but it is almost impossible to fight, prompting fans to say that it must be even vaster than it initially appears. This deadly beast was also a commander, able to lead other Necromorph forces against the CEC Colony and the USG Ishimura.

5 Laviente (Monster Hunter Frontier)

The 7 Biggest Video Game Bosses of All Time, Ranked by Size (5)

In a franchise filled with giant creatures, it really takes something special to stand out from the crowd. Monster Hunter players are used to taking on sizable beasts, even creatures like dragons are nothing special for players of this franchise. Hunters have to dig in and grind out victories by slowly tearing apart and breaking down these vicious, humongous beasts.

However, Laviente is something else. Considered a Wyvern, this serpent-like monster lives on an isolated island and despite having wings, it is more likely to burrow underground than fly. The total length of this ridiculous beast is estimated at over 1400 feet, making it one of the most ridiculously large creatures that must be fought in any video game, not just Monster Hunter. It is surprising as well that Laviente hasn't returned from Frontier.

4 Cronos (God of War 3)

The 7 Biggest Video Game Bosses of All Time, Ranked by Size (6)

The God of War franchise, particularly the early games, was also a series that didn’t shy away from placing Kratos in the path of enormous creatures. God of War 3 is one of the most beloved hack-and-slash games of all time, and certainly one of the best games in the franchise, and it includes a boss battle bigger than almost any in the history of video games.

From Hades to Poseidon, the God of War franchise is known for its incredible boss fights against some powerful beings.

Cronos, leader of the Titan and father of the Olympians, is a creature that is estimated to stand at 1600 feet tall. Cursed to carry a temple on his back by Zeus, it once took Kratos a full three days to scale this monster’s back. The scale of this boss battle is immense, the developers even had to try and scale him down somewhat in order to make the fight possible to execute against this ruthless Titan.

3 Sin (Final Fantasy X)

The 7 Biggest Video Game Bosses of All Time, Ranked by Size (8)

The Final Fantasy franchise is often concerned with world-ending threats of one sort or another, so it is unsurprising that one of the games deals with a creature so vast that it has a large piece of a city sitting on its back. This creature is known as Sin, and instead of a God, it is considered penance for the people of Spira due to the sins of their ancestors, making it one of the darkest Final Fantasy characters.

Sin is a humongous, whale-like beast that dwarfs anything in its path. It has no sense of morality and simply destroys everything it sees, prompting it to become the main antagonistic force of Final Fantasy X. The creature and the way in which it constantly returns makes it seem like the most single-minded force of destruction ever seen in a video game.

2 The Riftworm (Gears Of War 2)

The 7 Biggest Video Game Bosses of All Time, Ranked by Size (9)

When the Riftworm first appears in Gears of War 2, it is one of the most memorable and terrible sights in gaming history. Viewed as Gods by the Locust Horde, these creatures created life in the Hollow, after they made that new world by burrowing through the crust of Sera. Though as many as three are known to have existed, only one has been seen in recent history, during the Locust War.

This awakened worm was estimated to be somewhere between 8–10 miles in length, making it one of the longest creatures ever seen in a video game. Instead of a regular boss fight, there was a whole section of Gears of War 2 dedicated to the players making their way through the worm in an attempt to find its heart and kill it.

1 Gongen Wyzen (Asura’s Wrath)

The 7 Biggest Video Game Bosses of All Time, Ranked by Size (10)

Asura’s Wrath was an ambitious game that managed to make video game history in at least one way, it had the main character fight a creature of such unintelligible size that he wasn’t even standing on the planet anymore, but floating in space, the size of a planet himself.

Wyzen begins his fight against Asura about the same size, but he levels up in size over the course of the battle, his frustration in not being able to defeat Asura boiling over until he finally enters his true god-like form, Gongen Wyzen, sized like a planet, this is a true giant. He attempts to crush Asura, and likely destroy the whole world, with a single finger, but Asura has the strength to stop him.
