The channel is about 80km long, a ship takes 8 to 10 hours to cross it.
There are four locks, Aguas Claras and Gatun in the Atlantic side, Miraflores and Pedro Miguel in the Pacific side.
Miraflores and Aguas Claras have visitor centers and facilities for tourists.
Miraflores is 30 min by bus from Albrook station in Panama city.
Aguas Claras is close to the city named Colon.Written December 28, 2023

Beautiful old city. There are tons of restaurants and shops to enjoy. But also take some time to just stroll through the old city and enjoy the architecture and the beautiful restorations. We strolled along many empty streets after dinner just enjoying the scenery. Very different from the rest of Panama City.

This was an eye opening and informative tour behind the scenes of Starbucks’ only fully owned and operated coffee farm. It made us appreciate all the work put into making a single cup of coffee. Great setting. Very well put together.

The lunch at the adjoint cafe was delicious. I went into the theatre as part of a guided tour (available in English and Spanish) and it was brilliantly done. The staff dressed up as characters to recount the history of the place and kept us entertained the whole time.

One of the main reasons that traveler go to Xunantunich is its convenience, but my husband and I really found it to be among the most interesting ruins we were able to see. This Mayan site is about 20 minutes outside of San Ignacio near the village of San Jose. It is peaceful, sitting on the edges of Belize and Guatemala. To get to the site, you must take a small hand-cranked ferry across the Mopan River. It is an easy reminder to slow down as you go back more than 1000 years in time. I loved exploring these sacred sites that have primarily been excavated over the past twenty years. You can go with or without a guide, but you will learn more if you decide to hire a licensed guide. The fee is much smaller than at other Mayan sites and the depth of history is rich. Climb the El Castillo and see views in both Belize and Guatemala. Imagine how these living quarters once were a place for royalty. Take paths through the forest to see more of the site and mounds which reach as far as a 10 mile circumference outside the main site. There is also a museum that provides more insight about the area and other Mayan sites throughout the country and in Tikal.
Bathrooms, snacks, and other crafts and goods are are at the entrance. And there is one last stop for curious after you cross back over to the rest of the world. I definitely will return the next time I go to Belize.

This is a lovely way to spend an hour or two. Enjoy the views of downtown Panama City as you walk along the water. There are some restrooms along the way and a few areas with shade. However, be prepared for a lot of sun (bring a hat or umbrella).

I still remember the howler monkeys screaming through the jungle when climbing up the ancient pyramids of Tikal. I had made it my goal to climb all of them. Tikal is one of these magical places on planet earth you just have to visit once in your life.

These ruins have lots of detail. It is really interesting looking at the sort of art they used to produce. There were also lots of animals here, including lots of macaws!

I would think for most people you can think of few days in your life that you would describe as “perfect “ . My friend and I did hanging bridges with the volcano hike through Rainforest explorers with Mario as our guide and a Kendall, a “guide in training”. This was indeed a perfect day and perfect experience. They were so knowledgeable, respectful, enthusiastic and just down to earth, wonderful people. The lunch provided and the farm where we ate was amazing. I cannot say enough good things about this company and our experience. I will never forget it and want to thank Mario from the bottom of my heart for this truly wonderful experience.

One of the highlights of our non-touring time in Panama City was Avenida Balboa. This is an open area with sidewalks for walking and riding. We saw the Pacific, people doing yoga, and so much more. There are playfgorunds and fields for some sports. And we were able to see the almost dmoesticated raccoons of the waterfront.

Lots of rays and nurse sharks. Really nice snorkeling! We primarily did scuba diving in San Pedro but also love to snorkel and have heard a lot about Shark Ray Alley. We were not disappointed. This is especially good for families who are not divers, families where not all families are divers, and even divers who just need a more casual day on the water. We really enjoyed it.

This was a great tour. Gabriel explained a lot about coffee and coffee production. With an authentic tasting of different stages of roasting. And even with a version made from coffee cherry peels. An authentic experience - as is typical for Costa Rica.

My wife, son and I are holidaying from Australia, we hired a 4wd and drove from San Ignacio to Caracol. We read the reports of the poor conditions of the road. However, the roads are rapidly being improved, and it took us approximately 1 hour and 55 minutes to drive to Carocal .The first 50 minutes were on beautifully paved roads, and the remaining journey was on slower bumpy roads, but not difficult or scarey at all. We had nice dry conditions. They are constructing approximately 5 bridges, so I feel the roads are getting better every day. We visited the outstanding, popular Tikal Site in Guatemala the previous day ,however in comparison, upon arrival at Carocal (11am) there were only 10 cars in the carpark. Sensational place , we almost had it to our selves.

This is a really good option for families with young kids for a few reasons: 1) it's in San Ignacio and so you can easily get food, snacks, do some shopping, see other sites. 2) You can climb on the site, and it's a manageable size, so you can give older aged kids some freedom to explore in a place you can pretty easily keep an eye on them. Young kids may need company to scale some temples or steps, but many parts are very accessible for even ages 2 or 3. 3) It's an interesting site, even for people who have seen other sites both physically and historically. It isn't the same as Caracol or some of the other famous sites in Belize, but if you are traveling with young kids who won't tolerate a long drive or a family or group where not everyone is interested in ruins, this is a worthwhile replacement site. It's not handicap accessible, so for anyone who can't climb stairs you would stay at the main office, bathrooms, etc which does have a small garden/seating area.
