Local strawberries are one of the sweetest springtime harvests and right now they are coming in tastier than ever! This is a season that you definitely want to savor while it lasts, and there are many ways to do that. The first step to get the most out of them is to make sure you wash and store them properly.
One thing many don’t know is that strawberries are sensitive to moisture. If using them fresh, it’s best to store them whole and only wash them as you eat (instead of all at the same time).
The best for storing fresh strawberries is a small colander that fits in the fridge. This lets them breathe and last longer. If you don’t have this kind of colander, simply store them in an open container with a dry paper towel underneath the berries. The paper towel will keep them fresh and bright.
If you want to freeze your berries, here are some quick tips for that.
- Wash them, remove the green tops, and then slice your strawberries to your liking. If using them for smoothies, cut them in halves or quarters before putting in the freezer.
- After washing, allow them to dry on a paper towel.
- Arrange your berries in a single layer on a sheet pan. This keeps them from sticking to each other. Plastic wrap the pan and place it in the freezer overnight. Then, transfer them to a Ziploc bag or container and back in the freezer.
