How to Store your Potted Dahlias Overwinter

Once late Autumn hits and the first frosts arrive, it's a good time to bring your potted Dahlias inside for storage over the winter.

You will need some secateurs and, if you have a fair few pots, possibly some crates for storage. A cool, dry shed or greenhouse is perfect, but a dry spot under a bench on the patio will probably be fine as well.

Right, we're going to show you how to prepare your Dahlias to overwinter in pots. So if you grew your Dahlias in pots over the summer, they're starting to look like this now. So the frost has got to a couple of these. I've dried them back a little bit in the polytunnel. So we're just going to basically get them ready for overwintering in the pot. Grab a hold of the old foliage and trim it off. Make sure there's no weeds, then make sure you've got a label in and then just keep on going. So I just gather foliage up and just trim it about an inch, inch and half, two inches above the top of the pot. They'll dry out. You can just see the tuber there, so we know we've got a decent sized tuber in there, and the pot's kind of misshapen as well. We just get a black crate or a cardboard box. You can leave them on the side and let them dry out.

So we've laid them all down. They'll dry out nice and slowly, and they'll be fine in the spring. And if you want to put them into a cold shed or a cold greenhouse or on the bench somewhere, if you want to cover them up with just another piece of fleece, and they're ready for winter.
