sore on face
My blue/gold Macaw has a little sore on his face this morning, I think from rubbing his face on his blocks last night. Can i put some neosporin on it?

Hi Sue,
No, definitely do NOT use Neosporin or any type of ointment. Unless it is specifically an ophthalmic ointment, it can cause blindness if he gets it in his eye. Also, you can’t be sure what caused this spot. If it is still there tomorrow and doesn’t look any better, I would take him to an Avian Vet. Because of their bare face, macaws are especially susceptible to insect bites on their faces. Generally it will go away without a problem although in rare cases the insect can transmit disease. If it is a sore from something in the cage and does need an antibiotic, the vet will prescribe an ophthalmic ointment in most cases.
