Native Planting Directions:

Spring and/or Fall Plant (You may fall plant if you are in zones 7-10)

  1. The best time to plant is August-November, but they can be planted from August-April. Seeds germinate better if planted outside by using the winter weather to break the seed dormancy.
  2. Sprinkle Seeds on top of 1/2- 3/4 inch of potting soil, peat moss or fine sawdust. (Seeds only need to be in the ground as deep as the seeds are long)
  3. In areas of lower rain fall, or when planted later during the planting period, follow these watering instructions: Water seeds into the new soil and then keep area moist until the plants are established. (Once plants are established, they don’t need to be watered as much unless they are a wetland type plant. You can extend bloom time on flowering plants by watering while in bloom).

Store Seeds in a cool dry place out of direct sunlight until you are ready to plant them. Seeds can be good for 3 years or more if stored in these conditions.

*Be patient with natives as they can take longer to grow and establish. Some native flowers and grasses may take a few years until they are established enough to produce a flower.

Planting Directions for Flowers: Spring Planting

Sprinkle seed with container onto peat moss, fine sawdust or potting soil.

Peat moss is the cheapest and most economical way, next is sawdust and then potting soil. Use one of these three – spreading a 1/2″ to 3/4″ layer on top of your soil. By using one of these on top the soil already there, you will help prevent many of the weeds from growing in your flowerbed.

(Just remember not to work up your soil too much after planting your flower seed because you will bring up weed seeds to the top of the soil and they will grow).

Plant your seed after all danger of frost is past. Sprinkle seeds over your new planting surface you have made and then water your planted area. The water will push the seeds into the soft soil just enough for them to grow. (Wildflower Seeds only want to be in the ground as deep as the seeds are long).

Keep your soil evenly moist while the seeds are growing. Seeds will usually germinate in 1-2 weeks.

Once the flowers are established many of them don’t need to be watered as much.

Store your seed in a cool place until you are ready to plant. Seeds can be good for 3 or more years if stored in these conditions.

Planting Directions for Flowers: Spring and/or Fall Plant

You may fall plant if you are in zones 7-10, otherwise it is best to just spring plant for best results

  1. For April, May or June blooms, plant seed directly outdoors August-October. For June, July, August and/or September blooms, plant your seed outdoors March-June. Seedlings normally tolerate a light frost.
  2. Sprinkle Seeds on top of 1/2- 3/4” of potting soil, peat moss or fine sawdust.
  3. Wildflower seeds only need to be in the ground as deep as the seeds are long.
  4. Water seeds into the new soil and then keep area moist until the flowers are established (Once flowers are established they don’t need to be watered as much. You can extend bloom time by watering flowers while in bloom).

Store seeds in a cool dry place out of direct sunlight until you are ready to plant them. Seeds can be good for 3 or more years if stored in these conditions.

  • From March to June you can sow half-hardy annual seeds. ...
  • In June and July it's time for the biennials.

How often should I water wildflower seeds? ›

Seeds must be kept moist during the fragile stage when they swell with water until the time when new little roots have grown deep enough to find soil moisture. Important: do NOT let the seeds dry out! This may require watering 2 to 4 times each day.

Should all flower seeds be soaked before planting? ›

What Seeds Benefit from Soaking Prior to Planting? Almost all seeds can be pre-soaked, but it is large seeds, seeds with thick coats and wrinkled seeds that will benefit most. Small seeds benefit less and are difficult to handle when wet.

Can I plant flower seeds in May? ›

Annual types of scabious are simple plants to grow from seed and can be directly sown into the soil in May, after the last frost. Sow seeds outdoors in a sunny spot and keep the soil moist. The plants should quickly grow and provide a great display of flowers to cut come late summer.

Can you just throw flower seed on the ground? ›

Lightly scatter seed directly over the areas. Tamp seeds down to ensure good seed-to-soil contact. Doing this to a flower meadow is like working on bare spots in a lawn, and can be done once a season when soil temperatures are between 55-70° F in the spring, or after two hard frosts in the fall.

Can you put flower seeds straight into soil? ›

Planting seeds this way is called direct sowing, and it is an easy process that yields great results. Unlike indoor seed starting, direct sowing involves unpredictable elements: weather, wildlife and insects. Even so, many vegetables, annuals, herbs and perennials sprout easily from seed sown directly into garden soil.

How do you prepare ground for flower seeds? ›

When possible, rake the area to level the soil and remove weeds, plants, roots, and debris before sowing. If you're doing only one day of tilling, you can sow seeds as soon as the soil is prepared. If you're planning to till multiple times over 2-3 weeks, wait about a week until your next day of tilling.

Can I just scatter flower seeds? ›

If the ground is already prepared — meaning it doesn't have weeds and is already lightly cultivated — Becker said you can just scatter seeds on the damp soil (more about that technique below).

Should you water seeds right after planting? ›

You won't have to water after they are planted, preventing seed movement. Create a mini greenhouse by covering the seed tray with a plastic tray or plastic wrap. This will keep the moisture and warmth inside, and you shouldn't have to water again till after the seeds have germinated.

Do you have to bury flower seeds? ›

Wildflower seeds are much smaller than vegetable seeds, and their optimal germination conditions are on the soil's surface. The two scenarios where you may cover your seeds are if you are planting on a steep hill or if you're planting on a site exposed to strong winds.

What month is best to plant wildflower seeds? ›

The correct planting depth of wildflowers is ¼ to ½ inch deep. It is not uncommon for a few seeds to remain on the soil surface. This is a good indication of proper planting depth.

To allow the seeds full sunlight, do not cover them in any way. After planting, give the area a good soaking. We recommend watering regularly (but not soaking the area) until seedlings are about 6-8" tall.

What month should you start seeds? ›

Early to mid-March is the best time to plant early season cold-tolerant plants like broccoli, cabbage, and head lettuce, and long-season heat-loving plants like peppers, okra, and eggplant. If you mainly just start tomatoes at home, you can wait until early April.

What month should you start a flower garden? ›

Generally speaking, spring-flowering bulbs should be planted in the fall (a few weeks before the first frost), while summer-flowering bulbs should be planted in the spring (a few weeks after the last frost).

How long do most flowers take to grow from seed? ›

Flower seed packets rarely list estimated days to maturity, but most annual flowers need about 95 days from seed to flower. The ones that made my list start popping blooms in 60 to 70 days when grown under spring conditions, and they also tolerate light frost.

Can you plant flower seeds anytime? ›

Aim for the rainy seasons for best seed germination and growth. For Zone 10, which includes Southern California and coastal regions, fall planting is preferred, but the mild climate allows for a broader planting window throughout the year (some gardners can plant as late as November and December!).
