Guide to Wireless Security Indoor Camera

This post was updated on December 30, 2019.

When I picture an ever-blinking red light on a security camera, I imagine an old school CCTV camera system. Or it might call to mind a fake camera, à la 1990, back when real cameras were too expensive for most people to own.

Today’s higher quality—and real—security cameras have traded that constant red blink for multifunctional LED lights that indicate the camera’s status.

Guide to security camera LED colors

Red, green, blue, solid, or blinking—what does it all mean? The status LED on your security camera conveys a lot of information if you understand what it’s telling you.

Use this handy guide to know your camera’s status and what you need to do to get that coveted, solid-green light. We’ve modeled this guide after the different light indicators on our Frontpoint Indoor Camera, but it applies to many security cameras on the market.

LED setup reference guide

Flashing blue light on security camera

A flashing blue light on a security camera means you are ready for the WiFi protected setup. To enter the WiFi protected setup mode, push the WiFi protected setup button and release it when the light begins flashing blue (about three seconds).

Flashing white light on security camera

A flashing white light on a security camera means you are ready for the standard WiFi mode setup. To enter the standard WiFi mode setup, push the WiFi protected setup button and release it when the light begins flashing white (about six seconds).

Flashing red and green light on security camera

A flashing red and green light on a security camera means you about to perform a factory reset. To enter the factory reset mode, push the WiFi protected setup button and release it when the light begins flashing green and red (about 15 seconds).

WARNING: A factory reset will restore the factory default settings to the camera. If it’s already installed, the camera may need to be removed from the Frontpoint account and re-added after a factory reset.

Troubleshooting security cameras

If you have issues connecting the camera to the account, power cycle the camera (unplug the power jack from the camera and then plug it back in to restore power). If issues persist, you can conduct a factory reset.
