Schengen Visa Requirements

Travelers will be asked to provide a letter from their insurance company confirming that coverage meets the minimum level of coverage. The duration of coverage will need to match the period of travel stated on your visa. Any travel medical plans listed here will provide that letter to you.

Travel insurance is a requirement for the Schengen visa application process. You need at least €30,000 (US$32,800) in coverage in case you need medical attention during your stay in Europe, and you have to purchase coverage and obtain a certificate showing insurance to include with your visa application.

You can show means of subsistence, through one or more of the following: Bank account statement – Last three months, preferably of six months, of bank statements. They should not be more than three months old. Many consulates don't accept online statements.

A 1095 form or letter includes the health insurance details to help you file your taxes. You can use it to calculate tax credits or add up expenses for deductions. How do you get it? It's often sent automatically by your job, insurance company or the marketplace where you bought insurance.

Original Medicare covers most medically necessary services and supplies in hospitals, doctors' offices, and other health care facilities. Original Medicare doesn't cover some benefits like eye exams, most dental care, and routine exams. Plans must cover all medically necessary services that Original Medicare covers.

Schengen visa insurance must include: Minimum coverage of €30,000 (roughly $33,000) that is valid in all Schengen countries. Coverage for expenses related to transporting someone back to their home country for medical reasons. Coverage for expenses for emergency medical treatment or hospital care.

U.S. health insurance plans typically do not cover regular and routine medical care required overseas. This means your health insurance won't pay for care if you need to visit a doctor for a prescription medicine, or if you need treatment for a condition that is not considered an emergency.

Proof of funds refers to a document that demonstrates the ability of an individual or entity to pay for a specific transaction. A bank statement, security statement, or custody statement usually qualify as proof of funds. Proof of funds is typically required for a large transaction, such as the purchase of a house.

How do I show proof of funds in Europe? ›

Along with bank statements, sponsors may be asked to provide proof of their income, such as salary slips, tax returns, or employment letters. These documents further substantiate the sponsor's financial capacity and verify their ability to support the applicant financially.

You can provide proof that you have sufficient financial resources to fund a trip to Italy in one of the following ways: Bank statements. You must provide an original copy of your bank statements issued within the past month. The bank statement must be stamped and signed by an authorized bank official.

Travel insurance isn't required to visit Europe if you're an American citizen. However, some travelers are required to obtain a Schengen visa and medical travel insurance if they plan to visit any countries that are part of the Schengen Agreement, or stay in the area for more than 90 days.

While travel insurance for Europe isn't a legal requirement, it's still a good idea. It can ensure you're financially covered for things like cancelled flights, lost luggage or illness and injury while abroad.

Note that many foreign visitors traveling to the U.S. do not need a visa to enter the country for less than 90 days. However, some visa requirements for long-term visitors require health insurance coverage for the duration of their stay.
