Canon[]

Both characters have not interacted in the canon storyline yet.

There are a few notable similarities between Ei and Scaramouche. Both have similar hair color with the same pale purple streaks. In addition, a detail they share is that both have a mark on the back of their necks, being Wanderer/Scaramouche the one that has the shape of the electro official insignia and Ei's the opposite symbol, when these symbols meet they form a circle with three points.

Scaramouche/Wanderer was created as a prototype according to Ei's voice line about Kunikuzushi. Although it is mentioned in Husk of Opulent Dreams that she tried to keep the electro gnosis inside him as if it were his heart; however, he cried in his sleep which made her consider him too fragile, either as an object or as a human.

The Husk of Opulent Dreams set mentions that after that Ei could not bear the thought of destroying him, so she decided to "free" him by having him continue sleeping.

Upon leaving him sleeping in the Shakkei Pavilion, presumably on the fifth night of his birth, Ei did not give him a name, but did give him a golden feather that would serve to let other people know that they were linked, functioning as a certificate of identity granted by the Shogun herself. This golden feather was not used in Scaramouche's costume, however, it is present in his new costume as a Wanderer.

In the version 2.1 trailer, Scaramouche appears in Inazuma and comments on the fragility of Ei's eternity. When Ei becomes a playable character, it is revealed that she feels like she owes him something, which is why she does not assert control over him.

Ei still remembers Scaramouche and acknowledges his existence. In the artifact set Husk of Opulent Dreams, the set explains about his past and Scaramouche too knew her as his creator. But he thought that he was abandoned by her as it was said in the Plume of Luxury:

“The intelligent, lovely shrine maiden said: "This gold ornament is a proof of identity granted by the Almighty Shogun," "And she will not abandon you." "As for me, I shall do my best to send for help immediately..." ...But in the end, the golden arrow-feather were covered in dust, "And all tales were incinerated in karmic flames till nothing remained.”

Wanderer and Ei have many things in common as their constellations are very similar, their passive abilities are the same but focused on different weapons and so on. Likewise, they also have differences in their tastes in food as Ei prefers sweet food while Scaramouche prefers bitter food and hates sweets.

In Ei's second legendary mission it is revealed that the only thing she knows how to prepare in terms of consumables is tea, tea being Wanderer's favorite food.

Archon Quest[]

Yae Miko tells the traveler that Ei, while developing the technology to create her duplicate, created a test puppet who was not made in her image. Because he was useless to her, Ei allowed him to wander free. Eventually he was taken and modified by the Fatui, and given the identity of Scaramouche.

Following the story up to Sumeru is in version 3.1 where Scaramouche calls for the first and only time so far Ei as his mother, referring to her as god and creator as well, and referring to her as his first betrayal for having been discarded and abandoned by her.

In version 3.2 Scaramouche appears as a mechanical god, calling himself Everlasting Lord Arcane Wisdom, being the representation of an electro god although he could also handle other elements. In his boss form he shouts phrases that are almost a copy of Raiden's voice lines when playing as a playable character (Scaramouche says "burn to oblivion" and Raiden says "torn to oblivion"). Also, he has special lines in case she dies in his domain ("Your shadow has faded, Beelzebul" and "Godhood is mine now, Beelzebul").

After the 3.3 version Scaramouche removes himself from Irminsul and his existence is erased from everyone's memory, including Ei. Her voiceline about Kunikuzushi is gone after the quest.

Quotes[]

“He came about as a byproduct of creating the Shogun. Perhaps it's because I feel like I owe him something, but I do not wish to assert control over him.”
— Ei about Kunikuzushi
“The first to betray me was a god, my creator... my mother. Valuing strength above all, she saw no worth in me, and I was discarded.”
— Scaramouche
“She completely neglected her own creation, and to add insult to injury, she said it was because she "couldn't bring herself to intervene" in my fate...”
— Wanderer (Scaramouche's new identity) about Raiden Shogun

“I thought it was a disaster waiting to happen at the time, but she insisted that she wasn't going to lift a finger against the object of her own creation”
— Yae Miko about Kunikuzushi

Fanon[]

Since Scaramouche's first appearance, numerous theories have surfaced regarding him and Ei. Initially it was suspected that he might be Ei in disguise or the previous electro archon. Baal was eventually confirmed to be a separate character and no connection to Scaramouche was proven. Around the time the 2.0 update was announced, the theory that Scaramouche was the archon before her was abandoned in favor of a similar theory involving Yae Miko. This development fueled the popularity of the idea that Scaramouche and Baal are relatives of some sort.

By far the most common interpretation was that these two are siblings. However, it was argued that Ei is much too old to be his sister due to her immortality. While this could be explained by Scaramouche being immortal as well, there is no evidence for it. This gave rise to a theory that Ei is Scaramouche's mother or a distant relative. Fans found the idea of Ei being a mother amusing and there are several fanarts portraying this dynamic with Scaramouche

It has been confirmed that Scaramouche is one of Raiden Ei’s creations, and could be considered her child. His past is described as such in the Pale Flame artifact set:

“He was born with a face fairer than any other, Destined to a long life and a hollow will. He was a transcendent being, divinely created, but he was cast aside like worthless dross. Yet, due to an error that cannot be known, he roused himself from slumber, And began to wander the mortal realm. Before the Fatui found him, he had drifted for countless years And in that time, this is what his experience had taught him: "I am a 'human' who surpasses all others." "Even the gods daren't meddle in my fate." "Neither mortal nor god, nor fate itself, is qualified to be my judge." "I am free to choose how I wish to spend the remainder of my days." "Since these mask-wearing people are so fun to be around..." "I think I'll become one of them."”

Trivia[]

  • Anne Yatco, Ei's English VA, named the Wanderer in her game "Anak", meaning "child" in Tagalog, and a common nickname Filipino parents call their children.[1]
  • Scaramouche's English VA, Patrick Pedraza, covered the song "Mama, I'm coming home" which he dedicated to the relationship between Ei and Scaramouche from Scaramouche's perspective.
  • Raiden Ei and Scaramouche are inspired by gods of Japanese mythology. While Ei is inspired by Raijin, God of Thunder, Wanderer is inspired by Fujin, God of Wind. On the other hand, there are also inspirations in the Shinto religion (religion originated in Japan) since by their stories it could be said that Ei is inspired by Amaterasu, who is the goddess of the sun, and Wanderer is inspired by Susanoo, who is the god of the sea, storms and battles, and the younger brother of Amaterasu.
