Can newborns play with rattles? ›

Within the first month, they won't do too much. From two months, you can get your baby to engage in some play. Rattles and soft textures are what you're looking for in first-time toys.

At age 3-6 months babies are able to grasp toys and love baby rattles that make noise. From 6-9 months babies are developing the ability to master new fine motor skills. With this increased dexterity, babys like toys that are interactive with buttons, music, and lights they can command.

Around the three to six-month mark, it's usually a good time to introduce your little one to a rattle. That's because at this stage, babies are getting the hang of their hand-eye coordination and starting to grab things on purpose.

Rattles work on the baby's fine motor skills by encouraging various types of grasping skills. They grasp and hold the baby's attention, improving their cognitive growth. Babies observe that as they move their hands, the rattle sounds, and start understanding the concept of cause and effect.

At around 2 months, babies seem happy to see caregivers and smile when they talk or smile at them. Babies also start to open and shut their fists. This means they may be able to hold a rattle placed in their hands. They'll soon discover that they're the ones that make the rattle make noise!

Newborns enjoy sounds, and toys such as wind chimes, rattles, and musical mobiles are wonderful for stimulating their sense of hearing. In his first month, your baby will enjoy discovering different textures. Babies love to touch and grasp things.

Simple rattles and teething toys. Small stuffed animals with no plastic parts or buttons. Soft squeeze toys. Stuffed animals that play music.

Babies put everything in their mouths. Check when purchasing a toy rattle that it is at least 2 inches wide so it doesn't pose a choking risk. Don't buy a heavy rattle for a newborn child. Beware buying a clunky, heavy rattle for a child who does not have the strength to properly hold it.

When your baby is awake, give him or her supervised time on his or her tummy so he or she can develop upper body muscles. Focus and begin to make eye contact with you. Blink in reaction to bright light. Respond to sound and recognize your voice, so be sure and talk to your baby often.

Although younger infants can interact with age-appropriate playthings, such as by shaking a rattle, it isn't until after 6 months that babies really start to play with toys in the more conventional sense of the word — knocking over blocks, rolling a ball or snuggling with a teddy bear, for example.

Around 3 months of age babies can hold onto a small toy put into their hand; will reach for and touch dangling toys; and will explore their own hands and objects with their mouth. Around 6 months of age babies start to use their whole hand to grasp toys and objects and like to take toys to their mouth for exploring.

Wrist rattles can help babies to learn about their body parts. They begin to realize eventually that they have control over the rattle by moving their arm or kicking their feet.

Letting your child put things like toys in their mouth is important. This mouthing, gumming and sucking on their hands (and feet) and objects like toys can help prepare a baby for solid food. It can help de-sensitize the gag reflex and build up muscle strength in the mouth to chew food.

Decibel levels that are safe for adults can be potentially harmful for infants and children. Exposure to extremely loud noises for any length of time threatens to damage the hearing for the short and long-term.

The problem is, babies aren't capable of telling you if a noise is too loud, so it's very important that parents take steps to ensure their child's hearing is protected. You'll want to keep sounds around your child quieter than 60 decibels.

Babies also learn about the world through their senses — touch, sight, hearing — so some of the best toys for a 1-month-old might include playthings with contrasting colors, soft sounds and different textures. Think mobiles in bold patterns, playmats with hanging toys to gaze at and multi-textured rattles.
