This Pressed Flowers Wedding Cake was simple and elegant and perfect for a stunning, romantic wedding. The cake design was light and ethereal and inspired by nature. Perfect for the room it was displayed in and the wedding as a whole.

When my client, Pepper, sent me a few inspiration pictures for her wedding cake, I was instantly smitten. I've since discovered that there are quite a few pressed flowers wedding cakes floating around the internet, I had personally never seen one and immediately fell in love.

This cake was mostly inspired by a cake created by Sugar Euphoria. After deciding on the exact design, I knew that this was one of those rare cakes that would really have the "wow" factor".

To make sure the colors were perfect, my bride chose some very specific pressed flours she found in this shop on Etsy. I will link to the flowers in the info listed at the bottom.

This inside-outside wedding took place at Edgewood Plantation in Natchez, MS, and included so many beautiful elements. There were lanterns hanging in the trees and a gorgeous tablescape for the small intimate wedding party dinner.

I wish I had pictures of all of it for you, but you can get a tiny peek at the festivities here. When trying to describe the decor, my assistant and I came up with romantic, ethereal, bohemian (sort of), serene, and nature-inspired. All of those words are fitting, but in short, it was perfect.

What the family said about the wedding cake...

After sharing the cake on Facebook, here's what the bride had to say:

"ABSOLUTELY PERFECT!!!!!! Thank you SO much for making my dream a reality!!!" ~ Pepper

And I received this lovely note in the mail from the bride's mother a few days later:

"Dear Rose, I cannot tell you the compliments we keep receiving on Pepper and Wesley's wedding cakes since their wedding. Many have been for "taste" and many for "appearance." Pepper's cake was truly outstanding!! The detailing on the cake with the use of the leaves, greenery, etc. took the prize at the reception. I'm serious. Everyone agreed it was a stunning cake in design and flavor...."

With that kind of praise, I can only say that all glory goes to God. I could not do what I do without His hand on my life and the gifts he has given me.

Now - let me share some details of this nature-inspired wedding cake.

Pressed Flowers Wedding Cake Details:

  • The tiers were 5", 7", 9" and 11" rounds. Because weddings are limited in size right now, the guestlist for this wedding was greatly reduced and they didn't need nearly as much cake as originally planned.
  • To give the cake a more substantial "look" but avoid some waste, the bottom tier was a dummy cake. The other cake layers were baked in my favorite Magic Line round pans.
  • The other tiers were white almond sour cream cake with raspberry filling and cream cheese frosting.
  • The cakes and dummy tier were covered with homemade marshmallow fondant.
  • I used royal icing to attach the dried, pressed flowers to the cake.
  • The cake stand almost looks gold in these photos but it was actually a silver stand. This was one more element used to give the cake more height and presence in the room.

Were the pressed flowers edible?

I know some of you will ask or wonder... were the flowers edible? The short answer is no. To avoid any consumption risk, I included a clause in my wedding cake contract making it clear that the pressed flowers were not labeled "edible" and therefore, the fondant and pressed flowers should be removed before the cake was served or eaten.

This protected the wedding guests from any risk and me from any liability.

Where do you buy pressed flowers?

The bride chose pressed flowers from this Etsy shop. She specifically asked for the Mixed Ivory Flowers and the Mixed Brown Leaves.

All of her colors were very muted and beautiful... shades of ivory, brown, mustard, yellow, and cream. (I'm just noticing that the links seem to go to the same page on Etsy but you can use the drop-down menu to choose different colors/variations.)

If you're reading this and planning to make a similar cake, let me give you one very important piece of advice. Order the flowers as soon as you know you need them.

I didn't realize they were shipping from overseas and would take a long, long time to arrive. I was a nervous wreck when I got the delivery estimate of September 5th to September 25th. The wedding was September 12th and I had no idea if they'd arrive on time.

To cope with my nerves, I did two things... I started praying (and asking friends to pray) and I came up with "plan B", should it be necessary.

Thankfully, the pressed flowers did arrive with time to spare (on September 4th). Just in case, I had ordered some similar pressed flowers and leaves from Amazon just in case I needed to make a last-minute substitution.

Beautiful cake. I have a question. If you were going for flowers with more color, could you press edible flowers between wax paper and use those? I just don’t like using a non edible item on an edible item. Just a question.

    • Rose

You certainly press edible flowers or even buy edible ones already done!

It’s a beauty! I just want to ask, did you do anything to sanitize or clean the flowers and leaves before putting it on the cake? I want to decorate with dried flowers as well but this just bothers me

    Reply

    • Rose

No - dried, pressed flowers are too fragile to clean or sanitize. I attached them to the cake with royal icing and made it clear in my contract that the fondant and flowers should be removed before serving. They were decorative ONLY.

    Exquisite cake, so flawless.
I see there are different number of pieces on Etsy. How many pieces did it take for this cake?

    • Rose

I purchased 160 total but I didn't quite use them all.

        Hi Rose,
I am not sure I am posting this question in the right spot, so forgive me if it is attached to someone else's question. First let me say your cakes are beautiful and I LOVE this pressed flower cake. It is gorgeous! I have a cake business of my own and will be doing a cake like this soon. My question for you is did you attach the flowers at home or at the venue? Also do you think I could attach them with a little buttercream instead of royal icing? Thanks for your time. Take care and God Bless

        Reply

        • Rose Atwater

I attached them at home and yes, you could absolutely use buttercream!

    Beautiful cake! Stunning.
My question is - how far in advance could you put the pressed flowers on? Would the day before the wedding be ok?

    Reply

    • Rose Atwater

Yes, I placed them on the day before.

    Hello Rose,
All your cakes are beautiful. The Lord has truly blessed you with a great talent.
My future daughter in law wants this cake for her wedding cake , which is in 9 days. Even with 34 years of decorating under my belt I was to say the least hesitant on this one. I have never worked with dried flowers. I ordered these exact flowers on Etsy and I have plenty. The cake will be iced in buttercream and the flowers attached in buttercream as well. Since it is buttercream should I put the flowers on the night before or wait until I assemble the cake onsite? I will be traveling 100 to the venue that day. Any help, advice, thoughts would be so greatly appreciated.
    Thank you so much,
    Lynn

    • Rose Atwater

Awww, congratulations! If it were me, I'd wait and add the flowers after assembly, on-site. Just use the tiniest dot of buttercream to attach them.
