10-7od Out of service - off duty.

Our codes define how quickly dispatch needs officers to get there. Code 1 is our highest priority and a unit is supposed to be dispatched within as soon as possible. The dispatched units respond using lights and sirens.

In 1955, the use of the 10 Codes became standard for police officers. Truckers also began using radios to communicate with one another while on the road and faced the same issues with choppy or unclear transmissions. So truckers also adopted a set of 10 Codes similar to that used by police.

10 codes reduce the amount of Radio Traffic, like Short Hand for Radio. It was not intended to exclude the public. During 911, we did learn that it prevented communication between different agencies, with different codes. Now Most agencies use Clear Text, or plain talk.
