Have extra faux green picks, stems or bushels that you want to use? Give them a light coat of spray paint for an instant refresh to add to your fall decor!
Do you have too many of those little potted plants from HomeGoods or have extra greenery stems, picks or bushels that could use some sprucing up or that you don’t use anymore? I do! I have a ton of faux boxwood stems from Walmart that are less than one dollar and a huge storage bin filled of those little potted plants that I would grab a few of every time I was at HomeGoods. I have more than I need.
Instead of letting those extra pots and stems sit in a storage bin I thought I would refresh them for fall. With just a light coat of spray paint they instantly became fall foliage!
If you want to try this project and don’t have any extra, you can grab the faux boxwood stems at the craft store. I personally love the ones from Walmart. Once you gather up your green foliage you’ll need some spray paint and you’re ready to go.
I was also inclined to do this because I was having a hard time finding simple neutral fall stems like this at the craft store, so spray paint to the rescue! I absolutely love the way it looks!
What you need
- Faux greenery stems, picks, bushels or pots with faux greenery.
- Rust oleum spray paint in the color satin
- Rust oleum metallic spray paint in the color metallic rust – optional
- Floral foam to hold your stems while drying – optional
Grab your stems and lightly apply bursts of Rust oleum nutmeg spray paint onto your stems until you get the desired coverage.
Let that coat dry. Apply a little more if needed.
For a little more depth of color I added just a little of the Rust oleum metallic spray paint in the color metallic rust. I just lightly sprayed a few of the stems and some of the tips.
Once it’s dry add to any vase, arrangement, basket. I added mine to a cute pot I had on this large tray I styled for fall. I love this neutral color for fall. Now I’m looking for some more stems to paint!

I painted 3 faux boxwood stems from Walmart and 1 little bushel that I had from one of those faux greenery pots from Marshalls. I just removed it from the pot.
