How long to spend at Royal botanic garden Sydney? ›

You can spend a full day at the Sydney Botanical Gardens as there is so much to see and do. There are dedicated garden spaces such as the Camellia Garden, the Palace Rose Garden, and the Succulent Garden, to name a few.

Officially established in 1816, it is the oldest such garden in the country. It is also the most spectacularly sited, occupying more than 27 hectares (66 acres) along the shores of Sydney Harbour. The garden has about 5,000 kinds of plants under cultivation.

It has been an important centre for science, research and plant conservation, notably in connection with the cultivation of rubber plantations, in Southeast Asia since 1875.

Entry into the Garden is free except for special ticketed events.

The term Botanic Garden is mostly used for the older / earlier Botanic Gardens. Newer gardens are more often known as Botanical Gardens. While the names are often used interchangeably, the status of the older garden sometimes requires correct referencing - and this only happens when English is used.

Background. Established in 1859, the Singapore Botanic Gardens is the oldest garden in Singapore. Besides being an ornamental and recreational garden,¹ it was also a scientific garden in its early years.

They are Australia's oldest scientific institution (1816) for botany and horticulture. In 1821 Superintendent Charles Fraser, a botanist, was appointed to develop the gardens along scientific grounds for the first time. Fraser accompanied John Oxley on his inland journeys and brought back plant specimens.

These widely admired, extensive gardens right at the centre of Melbourne on the Yarra River is worth devoting 3 or 4 hours to exploring. I have been there more than 30 times, at all seasons, sometimes with large parties of children and other times as a couple or alone.

Although it's easy to fill a whole day and more exploring Kew Gardens' 132-hectare (326 acres) site, it's recommended to spend at least three to four hours to make the most of the gardens.
