Scores of Quebec municipalities will once more participate this year in the Défi Pissenlits (Dandelion Challenge), which calls on citizens to put off mowing their lawns, to promote the growth of pollinating insects.

By delaying cutting grass for a few weeks, citizens contribute to the amount of nectar and pollen, thanks to the dandelions that naturally occur in lawns. The delay allows bees enough energy to begin the pollination of plants, promoting the growth of fruits and vegetables.

Once the lawn is cut two or three weeks later, the dandelions will return with more nectar and pollen.
Each town in Quebec has its own schedule. In Gaspé, mowings won’t take place before the start of June, while in Montreal, cutting will probably start before the end of May.
The Défi Pissenlits was started in 2021 by Christina and David Lee, beekeepers and owners of Miel&Co in Portneuf. The campaign was a reaction to a spike in the death rate of bees, a rate that organizers say could be lowered by delaying the mowing of lawns.
