Myths about Wooden Wicks (2024)

Myth No.1

Wooden wicks should be waxed before use

False. They need to be used as you get them because waxing will not improve their burning. If they burn poorly, you need to look for other reasons: the wick may not be the right size or it may be undercut. Wooden wicks should be cut up to 3-5 mm above the wax (cotton wicks are recommended to be cut up to 5-7 mm).

Myth No.2

Wooden wicks are harder to use than cotton

With the right choice of wooden wick, it is easier to make candles with them than with conventional cotton wicks. The wooden wick has a wide base, creating a wider burning area. If the wick melts the wax too quickly and smokes, its size should be reduced. The wax should melt to the edges in about two hours. Wooden wicks do not require wick centering tools, they do not bend or move - this saves time. For completely safe use, we recommend using only the wick holder sticker.

Myth No.3

To burn better, the wooden wick needs to be longer

It is best to shorten the wooden wick to about 3-5 mm to ensure a right flame. If the wick is chosen correctly according to the size of the vessel and the wax mixture, the flame will be beautiful. If the wick is too long, the wax will not reach the top of the wick and will not create a flame, so it will be extremely weak or will go out after a while.

Myth No.4

Wooden wicks do not burn normally

A candle, no matter what wick it was made with - cotton or wooden - does not burn just because it was improperly made. This is influenced not only by the right choice of wick size, but also by the mixture of wax with all additives - fragrance or essential oils, dyes - and the amount of those additives in the wax.

Myth No.5

Wooden wicks are not suitable for soy wax

Soy wax burns more slowly as any other vegetable wax, such as beeswax, so a well-chosen wick (both in width and thickness) is especially important. To make the flame stronger, a booster type wooden wick can be used, such as a complex of wide and narrow wick (1/3 of the size of the main wick) (booster-type wick) or two identical wicks put together in one wick holder (dual-type wick).

Myth No.6

Wooden wicks do not burn as well as cotton wicks

If the wooden wick is chosen properly according to the diameter of the vessel and the wax mixture, the flame will be great. The wooden wick also crackles nicely and has a horizontally moving flame.

Myth No.7

A wooden wick can be made of any wood at home

Not true if you want a safe and proper flame. The licensed manufacturer guarantees the safe burning of wooden wicks without unwanted by-products, which is why such wicks are patented.

Myth No.8

Wooden wicks are not suitable for candles with a high fragrance load

A wooden wick fits candles just as a cotton wick does. In addition, fragrance experts say that using more than 12 percent fragrance load for wax content is pointless because it no longer improvesfragrancethrowin the candle, on the contrary, it can even be a cause of a dangerous flame. Thus, in this case, 6-8 percent of the fragrance to wax mass is completely sufficient to achieve moderatefragrance cold anf hotthrow, and 8-12 percent for the strong cold and hotfragrancethrow.

Myth No.9

Wooden wicks are harmful to the environment

By purchasing patented wooden wicks from a reputable vendor, you are supporting responsible production from sustainably managed forests in the United States. Poor quality cotton wicks can be made from pesticide-treated cotton, which uses a large amount of water.

Myth No.10

Wooden wicks do not crack

Properly used wooden wicks will definitely crack! This does not require any special processing materials. If you want to achieve an effective crackling effect, don't use 100% soy wax, but preferably one that contains at least some coconut wax or food-grade paraffin, as soy wax suppresses crackling.

Myth No.11

Wooden wicks are only suitable for making country style candles

Candles with wooden wicks are currently considered modern and contemporary, wooden wicks are suitable for both regular and luxury candles.
