Most pond snails do not damage healthy plants preferring to feed on decomposing plant matter and algae. They do however, often lay elongate (approx. 2cm) gelatinous egg sacks, on the undersides of waterlilies.
Water lilies create habitat for largemouth bass and other game fish. Lily pads also create an area for young fish to live. Areas covered in lilies are less likely to have algae blooms because the surface coverage blocks sunlight needed for algae to grow. If left unmanaged lilies can also have detrimental effects.
Why do lily pads pop? ›
They come up beneath the lily pads, targeting worms, snails, and other creepy crawlies. With a gill flare, they suck their prey in with so much force that they actually tear a small circular hole in the leaf. When that happens, they break surface tension and the quick release actually makes a pop sound.
Why do lily pads turn red? ›
As the pads sprout and grow from beneath the surface they are red from lack of chlorophyll. If the pad makes it to the surface and insects don't completely gobble them up, the plants go to the energy expense of pushing out their chlorophyll into the pads, which turns them green.
Why don't lily pads sink? ›
Lily pads have small cilia, or hairs, that resist the surface tension and keep the leaves from sinking into the water. Lily pads have gotten a bad reputation because they can, if the pond lacks enough wildlife to eat the water lilies, overrun a body of water and completely cover the surface.
