Spiritual Significance of Flowers in India

Flowers denote purity, strength, and selflessness. They inspire the entire human race to follow the path of righteousness. The sight of beautiful fresh flowers has a calming and positive effect on spectators, which is why they hold a special place in the history of humanity since time immemorial. Amongst all, Lotus also known as the Padma is one flower that is revered in Indian tradition. The flower is also known by names such as the "Indian Lotus," the "Sacred Lotus," and the "Bean of India.'' It is considered as a sacred flower due to its association with Indian Gods like Brahma, Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi, and Saraswati. In Buddhist symbolism, the lotus symbolizes purity of the body, speech, and mind because even after growing out of mud, these flowers bloom on long stalks as if floating above the muddy waters representing detachment and aversion from desire. There are other flowers like Star Jasmine (Kunda), Plumeria that too are important in Indian culture.


Various Uses of Flowers in India

Weddings

Flowers dominate all the Indian weddings. Right from mandap decorations to bridal makeup, flowers are used everywhere. They not only look beautiful and refreshing but their use is also considered auspicious. The reception decorations look inviting and luxurious when embellished with fresh flowers. A lot of flowers are used while decorating mandap. Marigold, roses, tuberose, jasmine, carnations are traditional flowers that have been widely used in mandap and reception decoration for decades. But with changing taste and preferences of Indian masses today, a variety of other exotic flowers like tulips, ranunculus, chrysanthemum, dahlia's, orchids, freesia, delphinium, peonies, hydrangeas and calla lilies are being used in wedding decor. A beautiful contrast is created with shades of reds, whites, pinks, purple and other vibrant colours.

A garland ceremony is the most important ceremony in any Indian wedding. Both fragrant and non-fragrant flowers are combined to create appealing garlands. Flowers such as roses, lilies, carnations, jasmine, marigold are arranged together to create a stunning pattern. Also, the bridal makeup in Indian weddings cannot be called complete without a hairstyle that does not have flowers in them. Gorgeous blooms such as roses, jasmine, orchids are used as embellishments in hair styling of Indian brides.


Flower Gifting

Flowers are the best gifts that aptly represent human emotions. This is the reason why flowers are considered as the failsafe gift for all occasions. Be it a birthday celebration or anniversary of a loved one or if you wish to convey your condolences for the family who has lost a dear one, flowers best express your emotions. Each flower and its colour has its own significance. So while selecting a flower one must keep in mind the message one wants to convey. For example flowers such as oriental lilies and roses are scented. These flowers create a positive atmosphere. This is the reason why patients are presented these fragrant flowers across the globe.

Flowers are also the best wedding gifts as they signify innocence and purity in a relationship. Flower gifts on weddings help make the entire experience worth cherishing. They also take centre stage in all romantic relationships. Red rose is a perfect symbol of love, and hence we celebrate Rose Day as a part of Valentine's Day celebrations. Some gorgeous blooms are also associated with zodiac signs which makes them a perfect flower gift. For example flowers such as roses and poppy are birth flowers of Taurus, lavender, and lily of valley make ideal floral gifts for Gemini, and white flowers especially go well for Cancerians.


Medicinal Uses

Fresh flowers are not only full of life but also hold curative prowess. In Ayurveda, many flowers and their healing properties are mentioned.


Roses

Rose water is considered highly effective in keeping eye problems at bay. Splashing rose water in the eyes eradicates redness and swelling. Gulkand produced from rose helps cure stomach ulcers and is a natural laxative as well.


Jasmine

The oil extracted from jasmine helps in treating skin disorders, tooth and eye problems and various injuries. The oil increases flow of blood in the body. One can also munch the leaves of this plant to get instant comfort in mouth ulcers.


Saffron crocus

Saffron crocus is a flower from which saffron is retrieved. The stigma of this flower has innumerable health benefits. Saffron provides healthy and glowing skin. It can also be used as an aphrodisiac, diaphoretic (to cause sweating), carminative (to prevent gas) and to bring on regular mensuration. It is also said to increase vitality, promote hair growth and protect against cough and cold.


Lotus

Raw seeds of the lotus are treated like medicine to boost strength and vigour. Along with honey, the seed is also used as an eyeliner to help promote better eyesight. Leaves of the lotus are used as cosmetic.


Marigold

People love to plant marigold flowers in their gardens as it keeps the house secured from mosquitoes. It is also helpful in curing liver problems like infections and swelling.
