Do I cut back endless summer hydrangea? ›

Endless Summer^® hydrangeas need very little pruning or even no pruning at all. However, if you feel some pruning is necessary spring is the ONLY time to do so.

Endless Summer^® hydrangeas prefer morning sun and afternoon dappled shade. If they are planted in full sun, it may be too hot and intense for the blooms to produce. Also, over-watering and over-fertilizing your plants can inhibit bloom production.

After trimming the stems at a 45-degree angle, dip the cut ends into alum powder before placing them in a vase of fresh water. Alum acts as a preservative and enhances the stems' ability to absorb water, preventing wilting and keeping the hydrangea blooms vibrant and fresh for an extended period.

If you've been trying to get your hydrangeas to become big and blue, then we might just have the tip for you. Hydrangeas color is based on how acidic your soil is—the more acidic the soil you plant your hydrangeas in, the more blue. We've found that adding a few coffee grounds to your soil can do just the trick.

If you don't prune hydrangeas then they can eventually resemble a tangled mass of woody stems, and the flowers will become smaller and less showy. Regular pruning of hydrangeas helps to maintain their shape and also encourages new growth and a better display of blooms.

Overwatering and over-fertilizing can decrease bloom production. Also, it may take time for new growth to appear if you pruned the hydrangea to its base.

Fertilization. Fertilize your Endless Summer Hydrangeas in the spring with Holly-tone for blue flowers or Plant-tone and granulated lime for purple to pink flowers. For best flowering we recommend fertilizing in April, May and June with 1 cup of fertilizer for each foot of branch spread.

Endless Summer hydrangeas grow best in partial sun. A location that receives morning sun and dappled afternoon shade is ideal. If these hydrangeas are planted in full sun, conditions might be too hot and intense for the plants to produce blooms. Planting in too much shade results in weak stems and fewer blooms.

How do you shape an Endless Summer hydrangea? ›

Pruning the center slightly taller will help achieve a nice shape. If any branches are crossing one of these branches should be removed. Pruning can be continued throughout the growing season to remove any diseased, damaged or dead material.

For Blue Hydrangeas:

Make the soil more acidic. Use soil acidifiers like sulfur or specialized products. Organic options include coffee grounds or pine needles. Add aluminum sulfate for a vibrant blue.
