Watering Bulbs for the Best Results

Flower bulbs are some of the easiest plants to grow: just pop them in the ground, add a little water and they will reward with you a ravishing display next spring. However, one mistake often made is to water them too little or too much.

How to Water Bulbs?

Most flower bulbs dislike "getting their feet wet" and may rot if the ground is too soggy, and many species such as alliums and anemones will grow well without much water. Sounds a bit confusing? Read our guide to learn more about watering bulbs.

Watering Daffodil Bulbs

Daffodils need plenty of water while they are growing. Water well when you plant the bulbs in fall as this will stimulate the roots to begin their growth. Keep the soil moist over the winter and continue throughout the blooming period as necessary. Stop watering about 3 weeks after the blooms have passed and allow the foliage and stems to die back.

Watering Tulip Bulbs

Tulips need very little water. Water them well just once when planting, then you can forget about them until spring. The only exception is during extended periods of drought when you should water weekly to keep the ground moist.

Watering Bulbs in Containers and Pots

A pot is a cramped and stressed environment for your flower bulbs so to keep your them happy, it’s important to get the watering right. Make sure the potting soil is thoroughly soaked when you plant your bulbs and don't allow it to dry out as it can be difficult to rewet it properly. However, don't allow the pot to stand in a pool of water. Over the winter, check that soil in your pots is moist and water weekly - except when the soil is frozen. As spring approaches and the bulbs start to grow rapidly, increase the watering to once or even twice a day.
