Can you use Preen with hostas? ›

When properly used, Preen Garden Weed Preventer reduces the need for hand weeding around your hostas and other garden plants. Hostas (Hosta spp.) grow in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 3 through 9. Start using this product in spring.

For flowers, roses, herbs, ground covers, ornamental grasses, shrubs, trees, and listed vegetables at least 2-3 inches tall, sprinkle Preen Garden Weed Preventer evenly over the entire soil surface at the rate of 1 oz per 10 sq. ft. Be sure to keep granules away from plant roots and foliage.

PREEN – You sprinkle Preen on top of the mulch in order to create this weed barrier. As with any gardening product, it's important to read the product label and follow instructions.

Mulching around hostas is a great way to avoid some other garden chores. Mulch helps suppress weeds and keeps the soil cool and moist, allowing you to spend less time watering and weeding. You can use bark mulch, wood chips, or even old leaves around hostas.

Put together a spray bottle that contains 1/4 cup of vinegar, 1/4 cup of table salt, and 1/4 cup of dish soap. Sprinkle the mixture over your plants. The vinegar kills the grass, while the salt prevents it from growing; the home made weed killer mixture is also a weed preventer.

Just as Preen when used as directed won't affect your existing garden plants, it won't kill existing weeds either. These weeds need to be eliminated prior to the application of Preen. While there are products that kill weeds, they will leave you with unsightly, dead weeds in the end.
