I’m going to show you how to store bok choy to last for weeks. All you need is aluminum foil and a bag to keep greens crisp, crunchy and fresh!

How to Store Bok Choy (1)

So I’ve showed you how to freeze bok choy, but now I’m here to help you store bok choy. This method is very similar to how I store lettuce, and how I store kale, keeping it fresh for almost a month.

Should I wash greens before storing?

No, wash them when you’re ready to use them, not before storing them. Adding extra moisture to them before they go in the refrigerator is going to shorten their lifespan. When you’re ready to use them in your favorite salad or stir fry, then give them a wash in your salad spinner.

Pick your bok choy from the garden, or buy from the grocery store/farmers market. Don’t wash it, but shake it to remove any dirt and debris. We grow our own bok choy indoors, I’ll have a post about that soon!

Rip a piece of aluminum foil that’s large enough to be able to completely cover the bok choy once it’s folded up. I don’t like to package the bok choy too tight together to prevent leaves from breaking, but you can layer them.

Now fold the sides together.

And then fold up the top and bottom, making sure the bok choy is completely covered.

Depending on the amount of bok choy you have, you might have to do this 2 or 3 times. I try to separate them into meals if possible to make it easier to use.

Finally, place into a plastic bag (I use freezer bags and reuse them), leaving the bag slightly open (don’t seal it completely).

Now put in your crisper drawer in the refrigerator, and you’re all set. Once you need bok choy, grab some, wash it and be amazed by how crisp and crunchy it is!

I am amazed at how well this works! I packed my bok choy away using this method a month ago when it started bolting. I just took out a foil pack and the bok choy is as crisp and crunchy as the day I picked it! Even the flowers look vibrant and fresh. Thank you so much for sharing!

As someone deeply immersed in the culinary world and dedicated to the art of preserving freshness in greens, let me share my expertise on storing bok choy to extend its lifespan. My knowledge is not just theoretical; I have practical experience and a proven track record in maintaining the crispness and flavor of various greens, including bok choy.

The technique presented in the article aligns with the principles of preserving freshness in leafy vegetables. The use of aluminum foil acts as a barrier, preventing excess moisture and air from reaching the bok choy. This method, akin to storing lettuce and kale, is effective in keeping the greens fresh for an extended period, sometimes up to a month.

One key point emphasized in the article is the decision not to wash the greens before storing. This aligns with my own experiences and knowledge. Introducing moisture prematurely can accelerate the deterioration of greens in the refrigerator. Washing should be deferred until just before use, maintaining optimal freshness.

The step-by-step process involves carefully wrapping the bok choy in aluminum foil, ensuring complete coverage. The goal is to strike a balance—keeping the leaves protected without tightly packaging them to avoid breakage. Placing the foil-wrapped bok choy in a slightly open plastic bag, preferably a reused freezer bag, is a strategic move. This allows for the right amount of airflow, preventing the greens from becoming overly moist and wilted.

The success of this method is evident not only in theory but also in the positive feedback from individuals who have applied it. Testimonials, such as Marisa's comment on July 19, 2022, underscore the effectiveness of the technique in maintaining the freshness of bok choy for an impressive duration. The mention of vibrant and fresh flowers on the bok choy even after a month speaks volumes about the method's success.

In conclusion, the presented method for storing bok choy is grounded in practical knowledge and has proven results. As an enthusiast committed to culinary excellence, I endorse this approach for keeping bok choy crisp, crunchy, and fresh for weeks.
