What’s the first thing you do when you walk into a restaurant?

For me, I scrupulously examine the menu for typos and then point them out to the waitstaff. I’ve been doing this ever since I was a kid and still do it to this day. My family and I even send photos of menu errors to each other via text and see who guesses the error first.

My childhood passion definitely led me to make money online and proofread anywhere I want.

How to Make Money as a Proofreader

Before worrying about making money, you need to learn the craft and understand the different kinds of jobs available (and which you want to pursue). That’s something Caitlin Pyle from Proofread Anywhere emphasizes a lot.

Don’t invest in the wrong training!

The two types of proofreading are:

  • General Proofreading
  • Transcript Proofreading

General proofreading covers things like emails, landing pages, eBooks, sales pages, books, and more. It’s a form of proofreading that corrects the written word. Transcript proofreading specifically deals with court transcripts and corrects the spoken word, which is completely different.

General proofreading is what I do if you remember my clients from before.

Now that I’ve tossed around the term proofreading enough, let’s go over what exactly it is.

What is Proofreading?

Proofreading is the very last thing to happen in the creation process, but it’s one of the most important ones. This is a simplified version of the process:

  1. Brainstorming/Research
  2. Writing
  3. Copyediting
  4. Proofreading
  5. Publishing

Transcripts follow a different process, but it’s the same concept in that a proofreader is the last set of eyes to critique a document before it’s published.

Just a quick note: copyeditors rewrite and restructure content. It takes more work, so they get paid more. A proofreader fixes the cosmetic errors after editing. It’s important to know the difference before you start doing two jobs for the price of one!

I sometimes bundle proofreading and copyediting services together, but that’s my preference and something that my clients enjoy. For me, bundling is one of the easy ways to make money proofreading.

At its core, proofreading, by itself, aims to fix:

  • Sentence structure
  • Grammar
  • Parallelism
  • Formatting
  • Numbers
  • Capitalization
  • Spelling

Some of these things can be very difficult to spot, so you have to take your time when proofreading. Accuracy is more important than speed.

If you’ve got eagle eyes, then paired with proper knowledge of grammar, proofreading will become a breeze.

Remote Proofreading Jobs

Proofreading happens in every country, but a majority of the jobs will involve a mastery of the English language.

For people who live in the United States, that’s great! You can proofread anywhere within the country. You can also proofread for international clients who are trying to cater their content to an American or English audience.

Quick note: British proofreaders speak English as well. Communicate with the client on whether they want the document proofread for British English or American English. There is a difference.

If English is not your primary language, then proofreading in English may be challenging, especially with all the strange grammar rules we have. You can also proofread in your native language, but finding clients may be more difficult.

Of course, there are some job boards and agencies you can start with that will allow you to work remotely. Some of those include:

  • Upwork
  • Fiverr
  • Kibin
  • FlexJobs
  • ProofreadingServices

While job boards may have more jobs, they might not always be compensating fairly for the work. It can be tempting to take jobs even if they don’t pay well, but you should value yourself and take the time to find the right clients.

I like networking through Facebook groups, which include clients from across the world. These are just typical blogger Facebook groups that have a lot of my target market.
How to Proofread Anywhere and Make Money Online - Unconventional Prosperity (7)

Legitimate Proofreading Jobs Online

While there are job boards, you don’t always know how reliable and responsible the client is.

If you advertise proofreading services, you may receive emails that look sketchy.

They usually are.

There are many clients that want work done for dirt cheap and they may not even compensate you. Or, worse, they could use your payment information in a case of identity theft.

Here are some things to be cognizant of when pursuing jobs:

  • Proper grammar in all communication
  • Equitable payment and its delivery
  • Promises or threats of things that just can’t be true

When in doubt, just Google the company and see if people are reporting them as legitimate or as a scam

Finding legitimate proofreading jobs through job boards may prove to be difficult, so that’s why I rely on clients I already know to contract services with.

Entry-Level Proofreading Jobs From Home

Finding your first proofreading job means the most. At least, for me it was.

It’s the start of your side hustle and while it might be euphoric, the process to get there may not be.

Sometimes, it takes a lot of cold emails and messages to get a client.

Quick note: the term “cold” refers to prospects who aren’t aware of you and what you offer. Those who are “warm” prospects are and will be easier to convince.

When just starting out, don’t expect to command the highest rates ever. The Editorial Freelancers Association provides industry standard rates that you can charge, but you may need to go under that at the beginning.

Clients who don’t understand the need for proofreading may not be as generous. However, there are plenty who do and you just have to find them.

I like pricing per job and not per hour because I don’t always set aside full hours to work.

Freelance Proofreading Jobs From Home

I promise there’s a light at the end of the tunnel after the entry-level jobs.

Caitlin Pyle managed to make around $43,000 in one year of freelance proofreading, so it’s definitely possible. Not to mention, she also took vacations! You can learn directly from Caitlin in this FREE WEBINAR where she teaches how she built her multi-million dollar freelance proofreading business.

Of course, Caitlin’s story is more atypical, but I mention her because she’s committed her time, energy, and effort in educating future proofreaders.

If you really want to become a proofreader and make money online, you have to invest in yourself.

She’ll teach you how to get clients that play well, but more importantly, she’ll teach you the craft of proofreading.

Yes, it’s a craft.

You can make money proofreading without educating yourself, but it will take you so much more time. That’s time you could be spending working for clients and earning some extra money.

But, don’t think that her course will magically make you a freelance proofreader; you actually have to do the work.

Proofread Anywhere Reviews

Caitlin offers two training courses on proofreading, based on the types of proofreading mentioned earlier (general and transcript). Before investing any money into your career in proofreading, figure out which course is targeted more toward the clients and subject matter you want to proofread.

General Proofreading: Theory and Practice™

As you’ll recall from earlier, general proofreading takes care of the written word on things like books, sales pages, whitepapers, and more.

You can even proofread menus like I casually do for free.

Just like every other online business, you need to find your niche to really succeed.

Knowing you want to be a general proofreader won’t get you very far at all. You should have a laser focus on the people who you want to help so you can maximize the value provided to them and command the highest rate possible.

Inside the course, there are over 40 lessons spanning eight modules:

  1. Introduction to General Proofreading
  2. Get into the Proofreading Mindset
  3. Proofreading Basics
  4. Proofreading Methods + Practice
  5. Turning Proofreading into a Business
  6. Looking for Jobs
  7. Once You Get the Job
  8. Getting the Most Out of the Freelancing Life

Caitlin really does an excellent job of going from start to finish in the process. And, note that she doesn’t even teach you how to get clients until you understand proofreading.

Why?

You may be squandering opportunities if you start reaching to people without knowing what you doing, especially if they’re already within your personal network.

Now, you’re probably wondering how much this course costs.

It’s $497 for the Ignite (basic) package and $597 for the Ignite Plus (advanced) package. Ignite Plus also allows you to get a:

  • Hand-graded exam
  • Certificate of completion
  • Listing in the self-publishing school preferred outsourcer Rolodex
  • Membership in a special marketing mastermind Facebook group for general proofreaders

If you ask me, the value in Ignite Plus is well worth the additional cost.

Check out the sales page for all the bonuses that come with your purchase 🙂

Transcript Proofreading: Theory and Practice™

This course is all about proofreading transcripts. Court transcripts are a fine example of what I mentioned earlier about selecting a niche.

Because transcript proofreading is such a highly specialized skill, it has its own course. And, it was the first-ever online course to prepare proofreaders in this way.

This course is structured a little differently from the general one. Accuracy is much more important; it is a court document after all and the goal is to correct the spoken word, not what it should actually be.

The different levels are priced separately to allow you to go at your own pace to ensure that only quality proofreaders get to the upper echelon:

  1. Beginner Basecamp: Introduction to Transcript Proofreading ($77)
  2. Jumpstart: The Nuts & Bolts of Transcripts ($197)
  3. NextSteps: Marking Up Transcripts and Practice ($400)
  4. Launch & Earn: Corresponding Within the Court Reporting Profession & Marketing Your Business ($500)

You’ll get discounts for the next levels along the way, so don’t let the price intimidate you. The important thing to note is that there are proficiency exams that you have to pass to advance to the next level.

These exams are graded by a living, breathing proofreader who knows what she’s doing (not Caitlin). But, Caitlin only wants the very best to advance to the next level. After all, this is her brand and her reputation at stake.

As you can tell by the sales page, transcript proofreading is much more of a craft than general proofreading is. You’ll have to know things like brand vs. generic drug names, medical terminology, and all the lingo of the courts.

Proofreading in this way will require technology. To be specific, it’s highly recommended that you purchase an iPad to use the iAnnotate app.

Proofread Anywhere FAQs

Hopefully, you’re interested in learning how to proofread anywhere you want and make money online. I’m sure you have some questions, so here is a bird’s eye overview of some of the frequently asked questions concerning proofreading and Caitlin’s Proofread Anywhere courses.

In addition to the FAQs on the sales pages, they have a category of FAQs on their website.

Will These Courses Discuss Client Acquisition?

Yes, of course!

But, you should want to learn how to proofread before you even begin to solicit potential clients and secure gigs. Whether you decide to go for a job board or clients themselves, these courses will discuss the options you have.

There are plenty of people who need proofreading, whether they know it now or not. This frequently happens to court reporters who are blithely unaware their documents have errors.

BUT…

It’s up to you to get clients! This course will not plop clients in your lap and expect you to do the work. You have to go through the process of finding quality clients yourself.

Do These Courses Offer Refunds?

No, they do not!

Before you get upset unnecessarily, there’s a simple explanation. These courses are digital information products that can’t be returned.

Plus, Caitlin made over $43,000 proofreading in one year, so she knows the craft and has put together an excellent training program.

If you can’t succeed at proofreading after taking the course, it’s not Proofread Anywhere’s fault–it’s yours. The course will teach you everything you need to know, but it can’t teach you to actually do it the right way.

While General Proofreading: Theory and Practice™ is only offered in one lump sum, Transcript Proofreading: Theory and Practice™ isn’t. That course is specifically designed for you to consume certain levels after progressing through. So, you don’t put up the full value initially in case you realize that you’re just not cut out for transcript proofreading.

And, remember that changing your mind and personal reasons are not valid for issuing a refund.

How Many Successful Students Exist?

Of course, success is not ubiquitous or everyone would be proofreading. It’s a skill that has to be learned.

While success IS NOT guaranteed or promised, there are plenty of happy and thankful students that have issued testimonials without being prompted to. They were just so joyous to share their success.

You can see those testimonials on the sales pages. They’re actual screenshots of people’s testimonials, so you know they’re not contrived or created to promote the course.

You shouldn’t base your likelihood of success on the success of others.

What’s the Delivery Format?

The courses comprise videos, worksheets, handouts, and text.

This means that you can take the materials on the go to proofread anywhere.

Personally, I love courses with videos because I’m a visual learner, but proofreading is all about technique, so the handouts and worksheets are essential for success.

How Long Will I Have Access to the Courses?

You get unlimited, lifetime access to the courses. It can’t get much better than that.

Will I Receive a Certification After Course Completion?

First off, there are no official proofreading certifications. Period.

That being said, with the Ignite Plus package in the general proofreading course and in Level 4 of the transcript proofreading one, you can get a certificate of completion.

Certificates aren’t just for collecting dust anymore, though. You can use them as evidence that you are educated in the field and deserve to be paid more for it.

Are There Additional Costs?

As mentioned before, in Transcript Proofreading: Theory and Practice™, an iPad is recommended (Android devices do not have the same version of the iAnnotate app).

You don’t have to buy the iPad new; it can be used or one you bought off of Amazon. However, it is crucial to succeeding in the course. Making annotations is part of the game and using this app is a technologically friendly way for the proofreader to make corrections and the client to observe what is being changed.

Which Course Should I Take?

I saved the best question for last.

By now, you should have a really clear idea of what the different kinds of proofreading are and which one you can and should pursue.

Transcript proofreading can be more lucrative, but it is highly specialized and not everyone succeeds at it. With general proofreading, there are many niches that are undersaturated with quality proofreaders who are begging for someone like you to step in and make edits.

Ultimately, though, the choice is yours. Take some time to think over it and send the Proofread Anywhere team an email if you want.

Conclusion

To proofread, or not to proofread? I bet that’s the question on your mind right now.

I love proofreading and helping content creators deliver grammatically free value to their audiences.

If you’re the same way, then you should enroll in one of Caitlin’s Proofread Anywhere courses. They’re the best at what they do and the immense value really shines through.

FREE 76 minute freelance proofreading webinar by Caitlin Pyle – learn how to work from home by proofreading blog posts!

I always invest in courses because of the course creator and what they have to say. Trust me, you should listen to what Caitlin can offer you.

Success isn’t easily obtained, but by taking General Proofreading: Theory and Practice™ and/or Transcript Proofreading: Theory and Practice™, you will be putting yourself on the fast track to proofreading anywhere and making money online.

Whether you’re a stay-at-home mother, a college kid, or someone just looking to make extra money on the side, you should definitely consider proofreading.
