How to Paint with Gouache

Gouache is one of my favorite paints to paint with. It has the fluid qualities of watercolor, but the opacity of acrylic paint. What sets it apart is its lovely matte finish.

It’s easy to fall in love with gouache, but there are a few things to know first.

  • Gouache can be painted on colored papers since it’s more opaque than watercolors.
  • You can use it with watercolor paper, but it can be used on other surfaces, such as canvas, mixed media paper, and even cardstock.

Supplies Needed for Painting with Gouache

  1. Squeeze the tube onto a palette. You’ll need a little more paint than if it was watercolor paint.
  2. Get your brush wet and mix it with the paint.
  3. Test the consistency on scrap paper, adding water or paint until you reach the desired consistency.
  4. Your first layers of paint should be thin. Let them dry thoroughly before the next layer.

Gouache Painting Tips

  • Use less water than you think, especially if you’re used to watercolor paint. Your brush should be wet, but there shouldn’t be a puddle of water. You want the consistency of milk.
  • Don’t buy cheap paint. Nicer paint is easier to use. Read more about my favorite gouache paint.
  • Gouache is forgiving because it’s opaque. If you make a mistake, it’s easy to cover up with more paint. Just let it dry before adding the new layer.
  • You can paint from light to dark or dark to light. Light colors over dark colors may need more than one coat of paint or a thicker application.
  • If you’re going to paint in layers, the first layer should be very light so that the next layer doesn’t pick up the color under it. Since gouache is water-based, it’s easy to reactivate the color beneath it.
  • Gouache doesn’t bleed (unless it’s too wet), so you can paint next to wet areas without problems.
  • Gouache can be painted on top of watercolor. (I used white gouache to create stars on my galaxy painting.)
  • If your painting looks too flat, try adding layers to create highlights and shadows.
  • You will need tons of white gouache when mixing colors.
  • If your paint color is too transparent, add a bit of white gouache to make it more opaque.

Gouache Paint FAQs

Why is gouache so expensive?

Gouache contains a lot of pigment to give it a nice vibrant, opaque quality.

Pigments cost more, so the paint will cost more. Inexpensive paint will not contain as much pigment and will not be as vibrant or opaque.

What paper do you use for gouache?

You can use watercolor paper, mixed media paper, canvas, or canvas board. You can also experiment on thicker papers like cardstock, chipboard, and even heavier weight sketchbook paper.

How is gouache different than watercolor?

Watercolor is translucent and uses a lot more water. Gouache is opaque and uses less water. While gouache can be used in a translucent manner, it will never be as translucent as watercolor.

Can you put gouache in pans?

Yes, it’s possible to put gouache in pans for portability or convenience’s sake. Get more tips for creating your own gouache palette.

Squeeze the tube into each half pan and fill it halfway. Help the paint settle to the bottom by tapping it lightly. Then fill it to the top.

Not all gouaches reconstitute the same. You may find that you prefer fresh gouache out of the tube instead.

Be sure to use an empty pan set with a lid, not a mixing palette. An air-tight container is your best bet.

Can gouache be reactivated?

Regular gouache can be reactivated with water. To minimize reactivation between layers, apply a thin layer first, and let it dry thoroughly before the second layer. Then apply a thicker layer on top in the next color.

I like to use eyedroppers to reactivate gouache, but spray bottles also work.

The alternative is to use acrylic gouache, which cannot be reactivated once dry.

Can I mix watercolor with gouache?

You can! They mix very well. It’s a fun way to make new colors or experiment with gouache without buying a whole set. Just mix watercolors with white gouache.

How long does gouache take to dry?

Unlike watercolor, which is notorious for taking forever to dry, gouache dries very quickly. It’s generally dry after 20 minutes, but of course, this depends on room temperature, humidity levels, and how much water you mixed with the gouache.

FAQs

Do you wet gouache before painting? ›

Dilute the gouache with plenty of water to reduce its opacity and obtain tones similar to watercolour. Wet your paper or surface with clean water. This way, the pigments will absorb less directly into the paper and the brush strokes will be invisible.

What do you paint first with gouache? ›

Gouache is not completely opaque.

It's best to apply light colors first, and layer dark colors on top. You'll never be able to apply a pastel shade on a dark background without a “murky” effect. My process is to sketch first and then block in large areas of color - keeping the light areas separate from the dark.

Do you use gouache straight from the tube? ›

You can use it straight from the tube and get really nice thick opaque coverage. You can easily spread it and fill in large areas of flat color if desired. The same coverage is not possible using dried gouache.

Which is easier to learn watercolor or gouache? ›

For beginners, watercolour is often considered a better medium to start with compared to gouache. This is mainly down to watercolour being more forgiving and easier to work with. Watercolour allows for transparency, which means you can see through the layers of paint.

What is so special about gouache paint? ›

The advantages of gouache:

Relatively resistant to colour fading. Can be transparent or opaque depending on how much water is used to paint. It is reusable by simply adding water (a painting can be reworked if it hasn't been varnished). It comes in different sizes suited to all budgets (tablet, tube, bottle).

Is gouache permanent when dry? ›

Gouache is a non-permanent, water-based paint that contains large pigment particles. Once dry, this paint is easy to reactivate if you want to make touch ups and changes. Similar to its watercolor paint counterpart, you must mix traditional gouache with water before spreading it across a surface or canvas.

Why is painting with gouache so hard? ›

The fact that gouache is rehydratable makes it a difficult medium. Beginners often find that when they build up gouache in layers, they reactivate the paint beneath, which smudges and disturbs the painting. You'll probably have to grit your teeth through a few such mishaps.

Is it OK to mix watercolor and gouache? ›

Gouache is a type of water-based paint that is similar to watercolor, but it is more opaque and dries to a matte finish. It can be mixed with other types of water-based paints, such as watercolor and acrylics, but it may affect the properties of the resulting mixture.

What happens if you mix watercolor and gouache? ›

The two mediums combine beautifully to make my watercolor art look more funky, vibrant and playful.

Do you do an underpainting with gouache? ›

Like acrylic, underpainting can be applied when working with gouache paints too. Underpainting will help you map out your colour values before going in and placing the colour. Keep in mind, if multiple layers of gouache are applied over the top of each other, you may run the risk of pigment cracking.

What paper is best for gouache? ›

Paper. Any paper made for watercolors is appropriate for gouache. You can also use at least 200 g/m², low grammage papers. To prevent any crinkling, paper under 300g/m² has to be wet and stretched on a board or frame.

What are the tips for layering gouache? ›

You want the first layer to be very liquid, like watercolor. The second layer should be slightly thicker than the first but still liquid. The third layer should be slightly thicker again and so on until you get to the final layer. This will help keep your colors separate when they dry.

Are you supposed to add water to gouache? ›

A heavy cream consistency in your paint results in the flat, matte, opaque finish that makes gouache so unique. Gouache straight out of the tube can be thick and hard to work with, but adding just a touch of water will help your paint easily glide across the page while staying completely opaque.

What kind of brushes to use for gouache? ›

When painting with Gouache, a synthetic brush is ideal - meaning the bristles are soft and smooth, versus course and stiff (bristles that feel like horse hair).

Is gouache good on paper or canvas? ›

Happily, gouache is versatile and works well on both paper and canvas which is ideal if you have a preference towards one or the other. For gouache painting on paper, Reeves watercolour paper is perfect; it is designed to take water-media already and is robust enough to handle this heavier type of paint.
