This natural soap with an invigorating fragrance makes a lovely handmade gift and is surprisingly easy to make.

We made two soap varieties (goats milk and aloe vera) using two of the many Melt & Pour soap bases readily available online and from selected candle/soap supply stores.

We used dried rosemary in the soap to give it a longer life (if using fresh rosemary, soaps will only last 1 week before going rancid).

Fresh rosemary can be dried naturally or in the oven for future use in cooking and craft projects.

Soap moulds

We set our soaps in recycled square paper milk cartons and round plastic yoghurt tubs. Cut and discard the top 2/3 off the top of the paper milk cartons, wash and dry. Wash and dry the plastic yogurt cartons before use. You can also set soap in a baking-paper lined shallow cake tin and cut out soaps when set using your choice of cookie cutters.

You will need

Makes about 8-9 soaps

  • 3 teaspoons dried rosemary leaves
  • 1kg Melt & Pour soap base
  • 2 teaspoons rosemary essential oil

INSTRUCTIONS

Finely chopped rosemary leaves in an electric coffee grinder or small food processor. Place soap base into a heatproof bowl over a saucepan of simmering water, do not allow base of bowl to touch water. Stir until soap base has melted. Remove from heat and allow to stand 5 minutes. Stir in rosemary essential oil and mix well. Stir a further 2-3 minutes or until soap base just begins to thicken slightly. Mix in rosemary.

If you pour the soap into molds now, the rosemary will float, to prevent that, carefully pour small amounts of soap into your containers or molds then wait minute or so before pouring in another layer on top. (Note/don't allow layers to completely set between pourings). Allow soaps to cool and set at room temperature.
