❤️Why you will love this recipe

  • It's very easy make. You only need 2 ingredients and less than 2 minutes to make a glass of milk.
  • Milk powders lasts long so you can make milk anytime you want. It makes a very convenient substitute for fresh milk.
  • You can adjust the consistency of the milk to your liking. If you want thicker, creamier milk, add more milk powder, if you want light and thin milk, use less milk powder.

❓What is milk powder?

Milk powder or powdered milk is milk in dry, powder form. It is often sold in tins or packets and come in a range of options like full cream milk, low fat milk and instant milk powder.

Full fat milk powder and low fat milk powder differ in the fat content, similar to fresh milk. Instant milk powder, on the other hand, is milk powder that can dissolve in cold or room temperature water. Milk powder typically requires hot water to dissolve, but depending on the manufacturer of the milk powder, different brands of milk powder may require different methods of mixing to make milk. The best way to know is to read the packaging as it would often contain guide on how to make the milk (in terms of measurement and water temperature).

Some of the benefits of milk powder is that it has a much longer shelf life due to its dry texture (there is no moisture, unlike fresh milk). It also does not require refrigeration but once the tin or packet is opened, milk powder should be kept in an airtight container to maintain its freshness.

I have shared on this page, recipe for making both cold and warm milk with milk powder. This is a small batch recipe and makes 2 cups of milk, but it can be easily halved to make a single serving of milk or multiplied accordingly to make more.

📋Ingredients

  • Milk powder (powdered milk) - this is often sold in grocery stores. Read the packaging to choose the type of milk powder you want. Full fat milk powder (whole milk powder) is recommended for this recipe.
  • Water - use warm or room temperature drinking water (filtered water)

*Refer to the recipe card below for full list of ingredients and exact quantities. For best results, use a digital kitchen scale where applicable*

🧾Substitution and variations

  • This recipe uses full cream or full fat milk (whole milk) powder for a creamy glass of milk. You can substitute the full fat milk powder with skimmed milk powder (low fat milk powder).
  • Buttermilk powder is not suitable for this recipe.

This recipe has not been tested with other substitutions or variations. If you do try, please let me know in the comments section below!

How to Make Milk with Milk Powder (4)

  1. Start by measuring half of the water indicated in the recipe into a pot.
  2. Heat it up.
  3. Turn off the heat and add the milk powder.
  4. Stir well to dissolve the milk powder.

🍽️Serving & storage

  • In its dry form, milk powder will last for a good few months (refer to the best before date on the packaging of your milk powder).
  • Once mixed with water into warm or cold milk, the milk is best consumed with 4 to 5 hours. In can last slightly longer if kept refrigerated, but best consumed within 24 hours.

💡Expert tips

  • When making milk with powdered milk, it is best to use warm or cold water. This will help the milk dissolve better. Avoid using hot water unless it is specifically mentioned in the milk powder packaging.
  • Using a whisk can help the milk powder dissolve better. Straining the milk after mixing will help to sieve out any clumps.
  • Once mixed with water, allow the milk to sit for a few minutes and then mix again. This will help dissolve any clumps.

💭FAQs

How is milk powder made?

Milk powder (also called powdered milk or dry milk) can be made in a number of different methods. These methods basically turn liquid milk into powder by evaporating the liquid content in the milk, either by heating (spray drying) or freezing it (freeze drying), leaving behind the milk solids which is then made into powder form.

Can the milk be used in the same was as fresh milk?

Yes, you can. Once made into milk, you can use this milk to replace fresh milk in the exact same quantity.

Can you adjust the milk powder in making the warm and cold milk?

You certainly can. In fact, this is another plus point of making milk with milk powder. Add more milk powder if you want a creamier drink and lesser if you want light milk.

Can you flavor the milk?

Yes you can. As mentioned above, you can flavor milk from milk powder in the same way as you do for fresh milk.

You can sweeten it with sugar, honey or any other sweeteners you like.
You can also add turmeric, cinnamon, nutmeg, cocoa powder and vanilla to flavor the milk. While sweeteners can be added after the milk powder is mixed with water, the rest are best added to the milk powder before being mixed with hot water. The hot water will help in mixing these powdered flavors (especially turmeric, cinnamon and cocoa powder to dissolved better).

What can you do with the milk made from milk powder?

Instead of consuming it directly as a beverage, the milk made from or reconstituted from powdered or dry milk can be used in the same fresh milk is used.
It can be used in recipes that call for regular milk and can be used to make sauces, soups, baked goods, and more. It can also be poured over cereal or added to oatmeal for a creamy and delicious breakfast.
The milk is also a great substitute for regular milk or creamer in your favorite coffee or tea (see this milk tea recipe made using powdered milk) and you can also add it to smoothies for added creaminess and nutrition.
