Take Away the Incentivize!

The main reason raccoons are coming around your home is because there is a reason. Typically this reason is they have gotten into some food source since they are constantly scavenging. Therefore, finding the basis of what they are going after will be the best step you should take.

Some steps you can take to de-incentivize raccoons consist of:

  • Closing and securing garbage can lids, so they cannot tear through the trash. Moving the garbage inside the garage will help if they cannot get in the garage.
  • Remove any outdoor cat or dog food storage to an inside location or secure lids.
  • Use raccoon-resistant bird feeders.

Once you remove any reason from them to stick around, they will move on to better opportunities. However, they can be very stubborn, so it is essential to commit till the activity is truly gone.

Sealing Up Your Home

Raccoons are expert climbers, and your home provides little to no issue for them to climb around on. However, as the house starts to settle, the foundation and walls begin to spread apart; they create gaps and access points. Settling allows plenty of room for raccoons to sneak around inside of your home without you ever seeing them.

Once they get inside, they are highly destructive, trying to settle into their new home. The damage caused can be anything from chewing wires to tearing insulation and other vital components.

Taking some time to walk around the exterior of your home will prevent any unnecessary activity. Sealing up any gaps around the house with silicone or steel wool will be more than enough of a barrier. Learning how to keep raccoons away naturally from physical barriers is highly eco-friendly and a great long-term solution.

Disrupt Their Senses

Cayenne Pepper

Raccoons have a keen sense of smell, and irritating their smell will repel them. Sprinkle cayenne pepper around the areas; where they are most active and let the pepper do the work. You do not need an excessive amount, but a fair amount scattered will help.

Epsom Salt (bonus!)

Epsom salt is a double benefit because not only will it deter raccoons, but it is an excellent fertilizer. Sprinkle some Epsom salt around garbage cans and gardens to keep them out.

Predator Scents

Tapping into their survival senses will also help prevent them from ever getting close to your home. For example, you can purchase urine from a local predator to raccoons and scatter it around the perimeter of your home. Raccoons do not want to be around any area where they might encounter a predator.

Knowing Where to Apply Scent Disruptors

It is essential to be strategic about placement when it comes to messing with a raccoon’s senses. When you use scent disruption and irritation methods, you are effectively repelling activity in that area. You do not want to place the disruptors in the regions that will drive them to the rest of the house. Any repellents must be in the areas that push them away from the home and the source.

If most of the activity is around garbage cans, it is best to create a barrier that leads them off the property. If you do not block off the rest of the home, they might continue their scavenge elsewhere. A curious raccoon is a dangerous raccoon!

For more stubborn raccoons, it might be beneficial to use different types of repellents around the home.

When All Else Fails, Call the Pro’s

The authorities might need to step in to address the neighbor throwing food onto your property. I suggest installing a hidden game camera to provide video proof.

Handling the raccoon is a different issue. The attic needs to have a wildlife professional come out and identify where the entry point is. Measures should then be taken to get the animals out of the attic. Finally, the attic should be excluded so that no new raccoons will get back into it. Cleanup of soiled insulation might also be in line if the problem is extensive enough. Give us a call if you are local! 720-583-4126
