I had a room through Expedia that I bought cancel for any reason. I got it the January before COVID hit that March. I received a full refund a few weeks after submitting the claim. Expedia only offered this as there were no refundable rooms at this hotel. It cost more but was worth it. I am not sure how it would work today.

Thanks, sassy. I guess that not too many other have experiences to relate.

We lost a lot of money on some airline tickets we had to cancel a while back (pre-pandemic) and I was especially wondering if the "cancel for any reason" insurances really will pay for cancelled flights for any reason.....

Travel insurance is different depending on the country where it is sold so you might want to indicate what country you're from to get more helpful responses.

I'm in the US also, planning September in UK and France, wondering the same thing. I've bought, never had to use, trip insurance in the past.

I imagine our own illness with an MD confirmation would work with regular insurance. What if a country somehow locks down for pandemic, though, now that COVID is old hat?

I wouldn't count on your own health insurance covering you in a foreign country. Check with your insurer.

Schmerl, I do not believe that stokebailey is talking about heath insurance, but rather cancellation insurance for travel.

Yes, stokebailey if one were sick, regular cancellation insurance should suffice but just like the point you make here about a lockdown, I was wondering about other not so straightforward reasons for needing a "cancel for any reason" policy. For me I would love to know, for example, if covid numbers going up and my feeling too uneasy to undertake the travel would be covered....

Yes. Thank you, socialworker. If we're paying a big chunk of money for Any Reason insurance, shouldn't that kind of mean, like, any reason? including cold feet?

Yes, stokebailey, it should! However my fear is that they (the insurance company) may be the ones who get to decide exactly which reasons fall into the category of "any". That is why I was so hoping to hear from someone who had used it-- either successfuly or not.

You are correct. It doesn't matter what other people experienced since every polity is different. Just ask a LOT of questions and read the fine print before deciding on a policy. Make sure to ask about pre-existing conditions.

Thanks, schmerl. At this point, I do wonder if it is just easier, albeit probably more expensive, to just buy fully refundable airline tickets.
