Hallmark Christmas Movies Almost Always Film In The Same Non U.S. Country (2024)

I hate to break it to you but Hallmark's Christmas movies usually go into production in the summer and fall, which means some of them are filmed when it's actually really warm out. They're also not often filmed where they say they are. Devastating, I know. You're definitely watching Hallmark movies for the realism.

The Hallmark Christmas movie filming locations are overwhelmingly in Canada — even when the movie takes place in Vermont, Colorado, or even Boise, Idaho. However, there are some movies that take place where they actually filmed. For example, the cast and crew for Christmas In Vienna really did travel to Austria shortly before the pandemic shuttered world travel. Although don't get us started on where A Christmas Tree Grows in Colorado actually shot its scenes. (See: not Colorado.)

Movie productions usually film where it's cheapest, and that's where towns will give good tax incentives. There's a reason that so many shows and movies film in Atlanta — it's just relatively inexpensive. The same can be said for Canada. In the past, eligible film productions could get a fully refundable tax credit of 25 percent when the movie shoots took place in the country. This year, North Carolina offered some filming incentives as well, and a couple of the Hallmark productions took advantage —including one called A Nashville Christmas Carol. (It's location blasphemy.)

But considering that Hallmark pulled out 40 new holiday films in a year where the coronavirus pandemic delayed production for months —we're just lucky we got snowy cozy Christmas tales at all, nevermind if their settings matched their real locations.
