A valuable, quick growing, hardy annual green manure particularly good in dry soils, but suitable for all soil types. Can be used as a summer/autumn manure, or overwinter from a September sowing for spring digging in. The attractive foliage quickly smothers weeds and its extensive root system improves the soil structure. If left to flower will attract bees and other beneficial insects. Contents: 50g (1.75 oz) sufficient to sow 22 sq.m (approx 23.75 sq.yd)

Sow from March to August, or September to overwinter, whenever the soil is vacant for at least 2 months, or where there is an area which requires increased fertility. Roughly dig over the soil removing any weeds. Lightly tread over the soil. Broadcast (scatter) the seed over the soil surface, carefully rake and water well in.

Allow the plants to develop for 50–60 days, usually just before flowering. Taller, stronger plants will draw up further minerals and will need chopping up prior to digging or rotavating in, but will provide increased bulky organic matter to the soil. Caution: irritant to skin and eyes.

Now, delving into the details of the provided article, it discusses a valuable, quick-growing, hardy annual green manure that excels in dry soils but is versatile enough for all soil types. This green manure serves dual purposes, functioning well as a summer/autumn cover crop or an overwintering option when sown in September for spring incorporation. The key attributes of this green manure include its ability to suppress weeds rapidly with attractive foliage and enhance soil structure through its extensive root system.

The suggested application involves sowing from March to August or during the overwintering period, whenever the soil remains vacant for at least two months or when increased fertility is needed. Proper soil preparation is essential, involving rough digging to remove weeds, light soil treading, seed broadcasting, careful raking, and thorough watering. The recommended growth period is 50–60 days, just before flowering, with taller, stronger plants necessitating chopping before incorporation into the soil. This additional step not only facilitates mineral absorption but also contributes bulky organic matter to enhance soil fertility.

Furthermore, the article includes a cautionary note about the potential irritant properties of the green manure to skin and eyes, emphasizing the importance of handling with care. The seed quantity provided (50g or 1.75 oz) is deemed sufficient to cover an area of approximately 22 square meters (23.75 square yards).
