Golden Wax Comparison: Which soy wax should I choose? (2024)

We are often asked questions such as ‘what is the difference between the Golden Waxes?’ and ‘which soy wax should I use?’ To help make this easier, we have put together a handy wax comparison chart for the Golden Wax 494, Golden Wax 464, and Golden Wax 444:

Golden Wax Comparison: Which soy wax should I choose? (1)

The Similarities

All three of the Golden Waxes are manufactured by AAK. They are natural, kosher, vegan and cruelty free. The most suitable dye to use with natural soy wax is the Inpex SD Dye. Additionally, all three waxes have very similar fragrance loads (10-11%) and offer fantastic cold and hot throw when used alongside Escentscia Prime Range and Style Range fragrance oils.

The Differences

When choosing which soy wax to use, you need to first consider the type of candle you will be making. For wax melts and small moulded candles, you need a wax which contracts as it cools to allow mould release and therefore the Golden Wax 494 is most suitable. Please note that the Golden Wax 494 is not suitable for pillar candles.

For soy container candles, you need a wax which is designed to adhere to the container it is poured into; both the Golden Wax 444 and Golden Wax 464 are suitable.

Container Candles - 444 vs 464: Which one to choose?

The Golden Wax 444 and 464 are very similar. The key difference is the melting point of the two waxes.

The Golden Wax 444 has a higher melting point of 49-52C. This allows the wax to retain a higher fragrance load (11%) and improves scent throw. Because of this, the 444 may be better suited to a candle maker whose main priority is scent throw or a candle maker who is not using transparent glassware.

The Golden Wax 464 has a lower melting point of 45-48C. This allows the wax to have improved jar adhesion and helps prevent wet spots. Because of this, the 464 may be better suited to a candle maker whose main priority is the aesthetic appearance or a candle maker who is using transparent glassware.

It is important to note that both the 444 and 464 will provide a good scent throw and adhere to the container, but they both excel in these different areas.

As with most decisions in candle making, wax choice is down to personal preference. We therefore recommend you purchase an 800g sample bag from our natural wax page and see which is best for you.
