Hi, everyone.
I'm Kevin with CandleScience.
Here to share sometips and best practicesfor working withAAK's 444 soy wax.
444 is a soy containerwax like its cousin 464.However, 444 offersa few differencesthat may better suit yourparticular candle making needs.
Let's take a look at somethings to keep in mindwhen you're getting startedworking with 444 soy wax.
MELTING
444 wax is slightly harder and has a higher meltingpoint than 464.
Ranging from 119 to 125 degreesFahrenheit versus 113 to 119for 464 wax.
This wax can be agood option if youneed to make sure yourcandles won't soften or meltin warmer weather.
Like with 464 andother soy waxes, use a double boiler ordesignated candle melterto protect your wax fromscorching or burning.
Don't be alarmed if the waxbegins to clump together. This is normal, and youcan break up the clumps with your stirring utensil.
Before you get started,be sure to only usefragrance that has beenapproved for use in candles.
FRAGRANCE
Like 464 wax, 444 has amaxed fragrance hold of 10% or 1.6 ounces per pound of wax.
However, we recommend startingat a 6% fragrance load whichis one ounce per pound.
Remember, more fragrancedoes not necessarilyresult in a strongerscent throw, and too much fragrance may
contribute to burning issues.
MIXING
For optimal scentthrow, we recommendadding your fragrance once yourwax has reached 185 degrees.
Removing the waxfrom the heat sourceand stirring gentlyfor one to two minuteswill also help ensurethe fragrance evenlybonds with the wax.
WICKING
Your wick choiceimpacts multiple aspectsof your candle.
As with 464 wax, werecommend the CD wick seriesand ECO series. For more information, refer to our wick guideto help choose the bestwick for your candles. The pouring temperature canaffect the finished lookof your candles.
POURING
We recommend startingat a pouring temperatureof 135 degrees Fahrenheit.
If you experience rough or bumpytops in your finished candles, try pouring higher--at around 150.
As always, you may haveto experiment a bitto find the pourtemp. that producesthe best results for you.
A heat gun is alsoan easy fix to helpcorrect the occasionalsurface imperfection.
FROSTING
Compared to 464, we have noticedthat 444 can be slightly moreprone to frosting.
Frosting is a normaloccurrence, and will notaffect the burning or thefragrance of your candle.
But to lessen theeffect of frosting, you can try preheating your jarsand glassware before pouring. You can also use opaquecontainers like candle tents, and avoid coloring your candlesto make any frosting that does occur less noticeable.
For ideal results, we recommendallowing your soy candles to cure for two weeks.
This will help your candles to maximize their fragrance throw.
