As I sit back with a glass of Corterosso, I think about how privileged I am to be a part of a flower family. With these roots I went up north to visit a nurcery with Fritillaria. When I open the door of the small nurcery of Gia flowers we go back in time.

Father Nick is making the Fritillaria Meleagris bouguets hand by hand counting every stem. This man works with passion every flower has his attention. He shows us around and like a waterfal he talks about the different varieties, Lutea and Garlandstar, every single flower contains large drops of nectar. Ivory Bells, Hermonis, Elwesie, Pallidifora, Uvavulpis, it’s a great hobby!

Gia Flowers existed since 1990, first they produced various lilies and summer flowers. In 1996 Nick started with Fritillaria Meleagris as a cut flower with 10,000 pieces, today expanded into a small 1,000,000. Together with his son Tim the Fritillaria business is becoming more professional. Since 2005, Fritillaria`s are their specialty with a cultivation of more than 12 species. This takes place in the period from mid-January to mid-May. Than it’s running season. Do you know why they called the company Gia Flowers? Go is All… that’s the way to go forwards!

Tim is very aware and thinks always with the question; What does the florist expect? and what expect the consumer? His opinion is to be more open about the expectations of Fritullaria. What you need to know is that they don’t last as long as regular flowers. Vase life is much shorter but the experience of these extremely vibrant flower is fantastic!
