The majority of Americans, 59% according to CNN, do not have a household budget. Unfortunately, even households that try to create and adhere to a budget may fail. Does that sound like you? If you’ve sat down time and time again to create a budget only to blow it a few days later, you’re definitely not alone. Luckily, there’s a new approach to budgeting that could help you be more successful: Weekly budget spreadsheets.

Personally, I’m a fan of monthly printable budgeting worksheets, but they aren’t the right option for everyone and if they don’t work for you and your family then it’s time to try something else (like this free weekly budget spreadsheet)! Here are 3 reasons this personal weekly budget template may work better for you and your family better than a “traditional” monthly budget template.

You’re not psychic!

Wait, are you? What number am I thinking of? 😉

Forecasting 31 days out can be hard, really hard, especially when you have kids. Kiddos just seem to radiate unexpected expenses, am I right? With a weekly personal budget spreadsheet, you can go one week at a time and make tweaks as necessary.

For example, let’s say you’re using a monthly budget spreadsheet and you give your family a $70 dollar allowance for eating out. In week one you go out to celebrate your new promotion (congrats!) and blow $60. That leaves $10 for the rest of the month. In week 3, the power goes out and dinner is ruined. You need to order pizza…fast, but it’s not in the budget!

If you had been using a weekly budget template you would have divided that $70 across 4 weeks ($17.50 per week) and be less likely to spend a huge chunk upfront.

It’s more manageable.

You may think working on a weekly budget spreadsheet each and every week sounds like a real drag, but it’s actually a lot easier to tackle than a monthly budget. There are a lot fewer transactions to review and expenses to try to remember.

Since you’re reviewing your free weekly budget spreadsheet more frequently than you would a monthly budget your also more likely to catch errors or red flags sooner. This can help you avoid additional debt, interest, or late fees.

A weekly budget template may feel more natural.

Think about how you plan your life. If there’s a big event, like your sister’s wedding, you probably put it on the calendar well in advance; however, for the most part, most of us break our lives down into smaller, more manageable blocks of time.

How often do you make a meal plan or grocery list? Probably once a week.

How often do you wrangle your family’s schedule? Probably once a week.

So why not use a free weekly budget spreadsheet?

If you’ve struggled with budgeting in the past or simply want to take more control over your family’s finances, I highly recommend trying a personal weekly budget template, like this one. (After all, it’s free!)

Tip: Whether you opt for a weekly budget template or stick with the more traditional monthly household budget, I highly recommend doing a month over month overview at least once a quarter. You can use this printable budget planner by month to help you get a birds-eye view. Doing this will help you spot any bad habits that might not be visible on a smaller scale.
