Fragrance Review: Marc Jacobs – Daisy (1)

Over 10 years since its release (in 2007), a cute bottle with big plastic flowers on top still crowns Marc Jacobs’ fragrance counters – with an impressive garden of flankers under its petals. It’s Daisy, a modern classic and major staple of the fruity-floral genre – and it smells just as cheerful as it looks!

Review

Real-life daisies don’t have much scent, but Daisy is a great interpretation of what these small flowers might smell like. It opens with sparkling, crisp grapefruit, and kind-of-synthetic but soft (and not too sweet) strawberry. That soon leads to a vague, light floral heart, with a grassy touch of violet leaf. The base and drydown add to the mix a gently powdery, transparent musky-woody finish.

Just like daisy the flower, Daisy the fragrance has a simple, casual character. It smells fresh, clean, mild, mostly floral with a slight citrusy-green side – and it does evoke the image of small, pretty white flowers randomly sprinkling a grassy field, under a clear spring sky (and drying clean laundry?).

Daisy is one of those scents that would hardly bother anyone, but might as well enchant them – again, it fits its name perfectly. This isn’t a super complex, intricate composition, but a very well-rounded simple one. I’d say on the “down side” that Daisy is slightly artificial-feeling, but it makes up for it with its light nature, and its memorable scent.

Also, I must stress how utterly adorable this bottle looks. Seriously, it always brings a smile to my face when I see it in stores. Argh, *must… not… add to wishlist… because of the super cute bottle…*

Daisy was composed by perfumer Alberto Morillas.

Notes: (Top) violet leaf, grapefruit, strawberry; (Heart) violet, gardenia, jasmine; (Base) white musk, woody notes, vanilla.

Colour Impression: Very Light Yellow.

Evokes: a sunny field of daisies and fresh grass; fresh laundry drying in the breeze (over said field); a white cotton dress.

Similar to: Chanel Chance Eau Tendre.

Season & Occasion: Everyday, daytime. A versatile, light scent.

Conclusion

“Inoffensive” and “pretty” are words that perfumistas often use in derrogatory ways – but there’s no reason why they should be negative! Daisy is proof that a casual fruity-floral can become a beloved classic, with a unique charm to its easygoing character.

Light, fresh and well-balanced – with interesting citrus, floral, green, powdery and fruity facets – Daisy is a perfect scent if you’re looking for an everyday, easy-to-wear fragrance.

In this same olfactive style, I slightly prefer the rosier, even smoother Chanel Chance Eau Tendre… but, granted, Daisy is less expensive, and lovely as well – especially if you like a hint of green grass with your flowers. Oh, and the bottle! Did I already mention the cute bottle? 😉
