For the cat villager, see Rosie.
For the frog villager, see Lily.
For the gorilla villager, see Violet.
For the peppy ostrich villager, see Flora.

Flowers are plants that appear in the Animal Crossing series. They will randomly generate throughout the town once a new save file is created. They can be planted either by players or villagers, although some special flowers only occur when specific criteria are satisfied. Flowers will grow throughout the year. They serve a variety of purposes, such as attracting bugs and developing a perfect town status. They can also be placed in a house as furniture or be worn by the player.

There are many different types of flowers and they come in a variety of colors. Players can develop hybrids of certain types of flowers through selective breeding.

Flowers in New Horizons work significantly differently compared to previous games. For more specific details on new mechanics specific to New Horizons, please see New Horizons flower mechanics for more details.

Overview[]

Flower seeds can be purchased from the Gardening Store or Tom Nook's store. Once grown, they can be transplanted, worn as accessories, used in home decor, or given as gifts.

In Wild World, City Folk, and New Leaf, wilted flowers become dull brown and are destroyed if picked, but can be restored if watered with a watering can on the same day as they wilt. Flowers will slightly brighten up upon watering; precipitation will also revive flowers. If not watered, a wilted flower will die in the following day. They will not wilt if the Beautiful Town ordinance is in effect.

Running across flowers gives a chance of destruction. Digging up flowers with a shovel will immediately destroy them. Both of these aspects were changed in New Horizons where digging up flowers now adds them to the inventory and running over flowers only destroy the flowering part of the flower.

Flowers can also die by having houses built over them. In City Folk, flowers that are nearby signposts may be destroyed by being under the footprint of a house. If a house appears at a signpost, any flowers located under its footprint will be destroyed. Note that this includes the space directly in front of the door. In New Leaf, locations of houses can't be so easily controlled compared to City Folk, although custom design tiles may help mitigate some of the erratic positions of houses. In New Horizons, the player chooses the locations of houses instead, giving more control to save flowers from house-related deaths.

Bugs on flowers[]

Many bug species only occur adjacent to flowers, includingladybugs, snails, mantises, beesand certain butterflies. Until New Leaf tulips did not attract any bugs. Three bugs, peaco*ck butterflies, orchid mantises, and tiger butterflies, are attracted only to specific colors of flowers. For instance, thepeaco*ck butterflyappears only when blue, black, or purple flowers are present.

The related dandelion, a variety of weed, attracts only orchid mantises. However, they can spawn on any white flower.

Carnations[]

Carnations come in red, white, and pink. The player receives a pink carnation in a letter from their mother on Mother's Day, and a red carnation from their father on Father's Day. The white carnation must be grown by the player, however, the player does not need to have both the pink and red carnations to grow a white carnation.

Jacob's ladders/Lilies of the Valley[]

Main article: Jacob's ladder
Flowers (215)

When the environment of a town reaches a perfect level (or 5 stars in NH), the Jacob's ladder flower grows usually on the edge of a cliff. It is a rare and desirable flower. In growing hybrids, placing Jacob's ladder next to parent flowers increases the chances of germinating a hybrid. Every day that the town is reaches perfect status, a Jacob's Ladder might grow.

Dandelion[]

Main article: Dandelion
Flowers (216)

A dandelion appears randomly, and although essentially a weed, it does not affect town status. It is brighter and fuller in appearance than yellow cosmos. After a few days, dandelion flowers turn white and become puffs which can be held and blown away by the player resulting in the seeds floating away and disappearing. Puffs do not re-seed.

Pocket Camp introduced white and orange dandelions.

Rafflesia[]

Main article: Rafflesia
Flowers (217)

The rafflesia is a large, red plant growing in the player's town when a large number of weeds accumulate. Its appearance means the town is at the lowest rank. The real-world rafflesia is notorious for its smell: in the Animal Crossing series, this is represented by the presence of flies attracted by the rotting odor.

To rid the town of weeds, either the player must pull them up or talk to Wisp who will grant a wish to remove all weeds if the player completes a task. Ridding all weeds in the town will make the rafflesia wilt and disappear. In New Leaf, the player can talk to Leif. He is shown sleeping as a villager would inside their houses. He will be traumatized by the weeds while the player is talking to him. Leif will then ask the player to help him pick the weeds. Once the player has picked all of the weeds, the player can talk to Leif again and he will give the player a rare floral styled furniture item.

Guide to hybrids[]

Plant flowers of the same type either side-to-side or diagonally. The next morning, a new flower may occur adjacent to one of the parents. Neither germination nor the occurrence of a hybrid color are guaranteed, as only 3-5 new flowers appear each day and hybrid colors occur less frequently than standard colors. As of New Horizons, there is no limit to how many new flowers can spawn per day.

Required factors:

  • The parents must be adjacent (next to each other side-to-side or diagonally).
  • At least one open empty space must be available next to each parent flower.
  • Same type of flower.

Beneficial factors:

  • Perfect town status.
  • Good luck from Feng Shui.
  • Presence of Jacob's ladders next to either parent.
  • Water the flowers after planting using a silver watering can.
  • Fertilizer (only in New Leaf).
  • Visiting players watering the flowers (only in New Horizons), up to 5 different players (watering effect becomes more pronounced)

Trivia[]

  • If a watered flower is picked up and moved elsewhere, it will not retain its watered state. Likewise, if an unwatered flower is moved onto an already watered square on the ground, it will count as watered.
  • Lilies are the only flower in New Horizons which do not have any compound hybrids. All the hybrid lilies can be bred from normal lilies that can be bought at the store.
