You’ve Been Flocked!

What does it exactly mean to be “flocked” with flamingos? I know for me personally, I have seen this term on social media, but I never really understood this was for fundraising.

To run a flamingo fundraiser, someone pays to have a large number of pink flamingos put in another family’s yard. After the pink flamingos have been placed, it is described as having been flocked.

The homeowner is left with a notice or flyer (free template later in the post) that describes the reason they have been flocked. The flyer will include instructions on how the recipient can make a donation to the fundraiser’s cause and choose the next “victim” to be flocked.

Alternatively, the homeowner can do nothing and eventually have the flock removed at a later date at no charge.

In order to run a successful flamingo fundraiser you will need the following:

  • volunteers
  • plastic pink flamingos
  • flamingo fundraiser forms
  • event advertising

How Much Do Flamingos Cost?

Once you decide to have a flamingo fundraiser, you will first want to figure out where you will get plastic pink flamingos from, how much this will cost, and also how many flamingos you need.

There are a couple of options on where to find pink flamingos. There are actually pink flamingo services you can hire to flock a lawn. Or, you could also decide to purchase your own pink flamingos and have volunteers move them from lawn to lawn.

To buy pink flamingos in bulk, they are generally sold in packs of 12. The price can range from about $40 to $60 for 12 pink flamingos. You can always check and see if your State offers a tax free weekend for the best time to buy!

In order to figure out how many flamingos you need, decide how many lawns will be flocked at a time. Then, you will factor in how many flamingos will be considered a flock. These two items will tell you how many flamingos you need.

What To Charge For A Flamingo Flocking

Now that you know how many flamingos you need, what should you charge for flocking a yard with pink flamingos?

You have a few options. You could decide to just have one price with one option for a certain number of flamingos to cover a yard. An example could be $20 for 24 flamingos. A typical flamingo flocking could be anywhere from 10 to 40 flamingos.

Another option is to have various flocking levels and different price points. This might provide more opportunities to raise more money. Here is an example of how pricing could work:

  • $10 for 12 flamingos
  • $15 for 20 flamingos
  • $20 for 30 flamingos
  • $25 for 40 flamingos

For the templates included later in this post, we chose to go with a flat “suggested” donation amount. This seems to be the most popular and simplistic, but don’t let that hold you back from offering the different levels if you want to!

At the end of the day, you will decide what you think an appropriate price point will be for your flamingo fundraiser. The cost of the flamingos, how many flamingos you have on hand, and the number of flockings you anticipate, will drive the prices you set for a flock of lawn flamingos.

Flamingo Flocking Fundraiser Flyer

You’ll need to get the word out about your fundraiser. Social media and email are always a great way to go. But, don’t underestimate the importance of making up some flyers too. This will stir up even more curiosity and interest in your fundraiser.

Your flyer should include who the fundraiser is for, how much a flamingo flocking costs, and the dates. Other information you might choose to have on your flyer are how long a flocking lasts and a website.

And, don’t fret about having to make up your own flyer. Be sure to grab your FREE printable You’ve Been Flocked! fundraiser flyer template below.

Feel free to use all three editable flamingo fundraiser templates in this post. You can edit the templates using Canva, an online design program, once you create a free account.

After opening the template, be sure to edit:

  • the dates of your flamingo fundraiser
  • what (or who) the fundraiser benefits
  • suggested donation for flocking
  • the terms of each flocking (how many days a flock will remain at one location, etc.)
  • how to get flock insurance (more about this below) and
  • contact information for the fundraiser’s coordinator.

Flocking Insurance

Another fun twist to a flamingo fundraiser is to offer flocking insurance. This means someone can pay a certain amount to buy insurance from a flocking. So, you might offer that for $10 to $30 a person can pay to NOT be flocked.

This is just an added way to raise more money for your cause.

Free Flamingo Fundraiser Order Form

If someone wants to flock another household, you should have a flamingo flocking form that is filled out. This will include the person being flocked, the address for the flocking, and the amount being donated to the cause.

You could also include a spot on your form for someone to purchase flocking insurance!

Click on the link below the flyer to start editing. Be sure to add the name of your school or organization, change the suggested donation amount, and date order forms are due.

You’ve Been Flocked Instructions Printable Sign

A flamingo flocking fundraiser sign can be used to relay all the information needed for the person being flocked.

The sign should include:

  • What it means to be flocked
  • Who the fundraiser benefits
  • How to make a donation (and choose a friend to flock in the process) and
  • A thank you for their sense of humor!

This way, the person knows why there are pink flamingos in their lawn! Plus, he or she can also choose to donate to your fundraiser by flocking someone else. The idea is to keep the flocking chain going for as long as possible. The more flockings you have, the more money you will make for your cause.

Use the template below to create a flamingo fundraiser yard sign. You can even order the 18″x24″ sign right inside if Canva!

With a yard sign, passerby’s would understand the flamingos are part of a fundraiser and potentially decide to participate in it as well.

If you’d rather use a small yard sign, you can laminate this template and attach it to one of the flamingos. This would explain who the fundraiser is for and why the flamingos are there. Check out this article next if you need to learn how to laminate at home.

How To Move Flamingos From Yard To Yard

If you are not hiring a flamingo flocking service, then you will need a few volunteers to help with moving flamingos from yard to yard. Typically, flamingos are setup at night after it is dark out, so people wake up to a flamingo surprise in their yard.

Make sure you have some volunteers with space in their vehicles to move flamingos. It’s also helpful to setup a schedule ahead of time to make sure you have enough volunteers to cover each flamingo movement between lawns.

If you need more engaged parent volunteers, check out this article next and consider hosting a Donuts with Dad or Muffins with Moms event.

Flamingo Fundraiser Variations

One variation to flocking a yard is requiring someone to pay to get flamingos off their yard. In this version, a yard is flocked with flamingos. But, in order to have them removed the person must pick another yard to send the flamingos to.

You could also offer to charge a little bit extra to have the flamingos moved earlier than scheduled.

Yard Flocking Ideas

Lastly, you should have some fun with your yard flockings.

One fun idea might be to dress up some of the flamingos. If it’s winter, you could give them scarves and hats. Or, for summer you could add some sunglasses. This would just add a little pizazz to your flamingo flock.

To summarize, in order to run a successful flamingo fundraiser you will need go through the following steps:

  1. Make sure you have enough volunteers
  2. Purchase pink flamingos
  3. Decide on a price for a flocking
  4. Create a flamingo fundraiser form
  5. Advertise your fundraiser
  6. Flock yards with flamingos
