Can I use bottled water in my CPAP for one night? ›

You can use bottled water in your CPAP humidifier if it is distilled water. Most bottled water used for drinking is purified or spring water. These don't contain bacteria, but they may have minerals like calcium and magnesium that can leave residue in your humidifier and may cause it to wear out quicker than expected.

Using tap water in your CPAP machine may negatively impact its performance. Putting untreated water, such as well water, in a CPAP humidifier may create health risks from the potential inhalation of unhealthy microbes.

Tap water​

If tap water is the only available option, it is safe to use, however it will require more rigorous cleaning to prevent excess mineral and bacterial buildup.

In addition to health concerns, using tap water with mineral content could damage your CPAP machine with a buildup of scale due to the minerals. Distilled water prevents mineral deposits, and most manufacturers recommend its use. However, it is possible to use tap water without significant risk.

If you do use one, then you need to follow a few basic hygiene rules. The water in the humidifier should be changed daily.

Filtered water is one solution. Filtered water starts out as plain tap water. You may already have filtered water in your home by way of a whole-house filtration system, a faucet filter or a water filtration pitcher (you can even get a filtered water bottle).
