The proof system in the United States was established around 1848 and was based on percent alcohol rather than specific gravity. Fifty percent alcohol by volume was defined as 100 proof.

The answer is simple actually. It does not freeze because of the extremely low freezing point of alcohol. The freezing point of pure ethanol alcohol is -173°F or -114°C.
Water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit (zero degrees Celsius), and the freezing point of pure ethanol alcohol is -173 degrees Fahrenheit (-114 degrees Celsius).
For example, most vodka is around 80 proof (40 percent alcohol), which has a freezing point of -16.5 F (-27 C), so it won't even get slushy in your home freezer - it'll just be very cold.
Pure ethanol alcohol needs to be -173 degrees Fahrenheit to freeze. At around 40 percent alcohol (80 proof), vodka has a freezing point that hovers at around -16 degrees Fahrenheit.
That's because its freezing point is much lower than that of water. Because vodka contains 40% alcohol, it won't freeze over until around -10 degrees Fahrenheit, much lower than your typical freezer, which is around 0 degrees Fahrenheit.
The truth is gasoline freezes at -100 degrees Fahrenheit or below depending on what exactly its mixture of liquid components is on which octane freezes earlier than that. Diesel on the other hand has a higher freezing point and could run into freezing problems which is why winter diesel blends are sold out.
Since conventional kitchen freezers can't reach below 0, the vodka stored inside them won't freeze. Instead, as the temperature drops, the liquid will develop a softer, more viscous mouthfeel that makes it drink smoother no matter how you serve it.
Just to clarify, all moonshine can be frozen no matter how high the proof is. It all depends on the temperature. 100 Proof moonshine will freeze at -25.2 degrees Fahrenheit. Our 128 Proof Blue Flame can be frozen, but it would require being stored at -43.4 degrees Fahrenheit.
It's unlikely your tequila will freeze in your freezer. Most home freezers cannot reach the temperature tequila needs in order to freeze (-10 °F or -23 °C). We don't recommend putting Patrón Tequila in the freezer.
Due to its ethanol content, vodka will not actually freeze solid until it reaches a temperature of -16 degrees Fahrenheit. Standard freezers are 0 degrees Fahrenheit, but that is still too cold for premium vodka. The optimal drinking temperature of vodka is somewhere between 32-39 degrees Fahrenheit.
What Percentage Alcohol Does Not Freeze? All alcohol will freeze at a cold enough temperature, but any proof higher than 50 will not freeze in a conventional freezer. This covers the majority of harder spirits you may buy, but beer, wine, and liqueurs will certainly freeze with enough time.
The exact freezing point of alcoholic beverages is dependent on its proof, or alcohol by volume. The lower the proof, the warmer the freezing point. Fireball Cinnamon products are lower in alcohol than Fireball Whisky, so they will likely freeze when placed in a standard home freezer typically set to 0°F.
The freezing point for pure ethanol is actually -175°F or -115°C. On the other hand, water freezes at 32°F or 0°C. So the more watered down your alcohol is, the more likely it is to freeze.
Most home freezers cannot reach the temperature tequila needs in order to freeze (-10 °F or -23 °C). We don't recommend putting Patrón Tequila in the freezer. It won't ruin it, but drinking tequila at lower temperatures will affect the taste and aroma—at lower temperatures, the “sweet” flavor is usually lost.
Wood alcohol and denatured alcohol rank next in effectiveness, at concentrations of 50 and 70 per cent by volume, and resist freezing at a temperature of -40 deg. fahr. Alcohol has several virtues as an anti-freeze material but boils at 172.4 deg.
Spirits with an ABV of 40 percent or higher — or 80 proof and above — can be stored in the freezer with relatively little likelihood of them actually freezing, but does that mean you should? When alcohol is placed in the freezer, the cold temperature chills the liquid, but also causes it to taste muted.
