I’m one of those people who usuallystarts to wilta bit when the temperature goes about 25°C. I don’t know about you, but I findmy scalp gets pretty dampin conditions like that, especially when I’m rushing around. And, because I wear a wig,it’s hard to cool my head down, and the moisture goes into the wig base. All in all, it’s not ideal; nobody likes a sweaty head and a damp wig.

My Great Tips for Wearing a Wig in the Summer.

What are the best wig styles to wear in the summer?

Ashort wigfor hot days would work if you change your style around on a daily basis. There are so many fabulous, short wig styles for summerto choose from, including sleekbobs, textured pixie cuts and wavy lobs. Or, how about a style that’sshoulder lengthorlonger,so you can put it up in a loose ponytail or messy up-do?

Top Tip: Don’t try to do a neat pony or up-do; things generally look more natural if you leave them messy.

When wearing wigs in summer, it’s also best to stick to lighter colours if you can, as lighter colours don’t absorb as much heat as dark colours. This is something to keep in mind when choosing yoursummer wig colourif you struggle with the heat.

Should I wear a synthetic or human hair wig during summer?

Overall, synthetic wigs are the winner during the summer months. Synthetic fibres are lighter thanhuman hair, so should keep you cooler. Also, human hair wigs will react to the hot weather in the same way natural hair would; it can lose shape and style or go frizzy with the humidity. Synthetic wigs, however, have ‘style memory’ and will hold their shape even when exposed to the elements.

Of course, you can still rock a human hair wig, but if you’re wearing wigs in the summer and are concerned about overheating, synthetic wigs are a fantastic option to try.

Whatever wig type you go for, make sure to choose the right accompanyingwig careproducts to keep your wig fresh and flawless all summer long.

What type of wig construction is best in the summer?

When it comes to wig construction, I’ve always been a fan of fullyhandtied wigs. At the moment I’ve got one that’s wefted at the back and hand tied on the crown. I’m certainly finding that thewefted construction helps keep things a bit cooleras it lets the air circulate more. My wig is also a bit big on me which – although not something I would usually advocate – is also contributing to the better airflow!

Should I wear a wig cap in the summer?

Having a moisture-absorbing layer between your scalp and wig can help with the heat in summer. Consider either wearing awig cap, or alternating between wearing wigs and lightheadwear(like headscarves) when the weather gets warm to give your scalp regular breaks. If you’re not confidentputting on a wig cap, check out our dedicated guide.

How to keep from sweating while wearing a wig

Wig caps are one effective method to help reduce sweating when wig wearing. For the summer in particular, we recommend opting forbamboo wig caps/liners.The material moves sweat to the outer surface of the fabric and dries quicker, helping to avoid excess sweating.

Keeping your wigoff your neckis key when it comes to preventing your head from overheating. I’ve already mentioned that opting for an up-do, if you have a longer length wig, can help. However, if your aim is to keep from sweating as much as possible, plaits and braids are the most effective styles to go for.

Should I bring my wig on my summer holiday?

There’s absolutely no reason why you can’t take your wig, or wigs, with you on a summer holiday. I know a few of you have asked about whether thelittle metal bitsin a wig will set off airport scanners, leading to embarrassment. All I can say is that I’ve been through plenty of them and it’snever been an issue. Heck, I used to go through with a navel piercing and that never seemed to set them off either! In the very unlikely event that it did happen, all they do is wave a hand scanner over you, so even if that beeped everyone would just assume your earrings had set it off. So don’t worry, don’t let it stop you going on holiday, and go have fun!

One of the most important aspects to consider whentravelling with a wigis how to store it safely. Acollapsible wig standis great to bring with you; not only is it portable, but it will also keep your wig ventilated and shapely so you’ll look and feel fabulous on your travels. If you need assistanceputting together a collapsible wig stand, please see the complete guide.

Keeping your head coolwhen wearing wigs in summer is important. However, if you’re feeling overheated, one of thefastest ways to cool downis to run cold water over the inside of your wrists. Manyrunners do this to cool down after a run, as the blood vessels are very close to the surface on your pulse points, it’s a great way to cool down quickly.

How often should I wash my wig in summer?

There’s no magic number of times to wash your wig, it all depends on how often you’re wearing wigs in the summer and how much you sweat. However, as a general rule of thumb, you’ll want to wash your wig more frequently in the hotter, summer months because sweat and oils will build up more quickly. Excess oils can damage your wig and may cause irritation to your scalp.

You can definitely wear a wig in direct sunlight – everyone wants to enjoy the warmth of the sun! However, you just need to be thoughtful about how much sun exposure your wig is receiving. Too much direct sunlight can damage the fibres of your wig and cause the colour to fade. It’s also best for our health if we’re sensible in the sun, keeping in the shade when possible.

Wearing Headwear Instead of Wigs in Summer

One question I often get asked is whether you can wear a hat, such as a wide-brimmed sunhat, as well as a wig. While you can do this, there are two things to keep in mind.

One is that you may need to size up your hat to account for the wig underneath, as you don’t want to crush the fibres and you want to make sure the wig and your head can breathe.

The other is that, while a stylish choice, wearing a hat as well as a wig in summer can make you more prone to overheating. This is a particular concern for more vulnerable wig wearers, such as those who are older or who are ill.

However, there’s no need for concern – Simply Wigs has got you covered! There are plenty of light, breathable headwear options to ensure you stay cool:

  • Turbans and headscarves

Turbans and headscarves are a fantastic alternative to wigs in hot weather. Make sure you choose a breathable fabric, like silk or bamboo, as these will help keep you cool.

There are also plenty of style options, depending on your preference. If you prefer long hair, try a turban or headscarf with a tail – the Yanna White Summertime Turban from Masumi Headwear is a gorgeously bright and summer turban, with a floral band that falls down just like a ponytail. Alternatively, the Sienna Boho Turban from Christine Headwear has beautiful ruffled fabric and a tied band, giving the illusion of volume as if there is hair underneath!

  • Sun caps and sunhats

Of course, you can wear a hat over your wig if you prefer. Or why not try a sunhat that can be worn on its own to help you stay cool and look fabulous!

The Mali Straw Hat from Christine Headwear sits low and has a tapered brim, protecting your head and face from the sun and disguising any hair loss in one fell swoop! And the Lola Hat from Masumi Headwear is a light, breathable linen hat with a long band that hangs down the back.

  1. I find sweat running into my eyes a real problem and now I find that I have to abandon my wigs when it is really hot. I have tried silk scarves, they may look wonderful but have a horrible tendency to part company with my head. Not a good look. My current solution is to wear a snug fitting turban (like the Christine Headwear turbans), not too hot and no sweat in my eyes.

  2. I’m in southern Italy at the moment. The heat and humidity is unbearable. I have been melting. Literally. At dinner the sweat was dripping off my face and into my lap. And, like one of your commenters, I became quite ill from the heat. I wish I had the answer…

  3. As a new wig wearer I was absolutely dreading the summer months. As for planning a holiday, well, that was a definite no no. After reading all your comments I feel more confident and not so afraid of the sun shining. A big thank you to all of you.

  4. I find really hot weather -anything above 25C unbearable in wigs, short or not. Hats a no no as theyre hot to wear. In hot weather I wear wet silk scarfs. Keeps my head protected but cool. Am allergic to alo-vera sadly. U can buy a cool head banana that has gell in it that you wet & freeze – meant 4 walkers & pop that on under ure wig or wear across forehead over wig. I always have UV protected umbrella with me so can keep sun off….that helps too. I find it a real problem if I’m honest…..would love a better solution! Simply wigs if your company can get a proper cool wig designed you would be onto a winner!

  5. In reply to Vicky Thomas I found that when wearing my wig I could fit into a mans trilby type sun hat as it was bigger.
I often have to wear it on its own though as I get so overheated with the wig on and have been sick a few times even though I’ve been careful to stay in the shade.
Becoming a bit if a problem when we go abroad so may just have to brave the bald me!

  6. The advice was very good but one comment I’d like to pick up on was wearing a hat in the sun to stop the wig fading. I find it impossible to wear a hat over my wig (no hat is big enough!) Have you any suggestions about suitable hats?

  7. I keep a tube of Aloe Vera gel in the fridge and if I get too hot I rub it over my head and put my wig back on . Witch hazel can also be good
for that purpose. Both are very cooling .

  8. I have done this but I know it is a bit daft:
I was walking with friends in Portugal. Expiring from the heat and feeling as though I was wearing a wooly hat. Stopped in a café, went into the loo, whipped off the (synthetic) wig and dampened it under the tap. Replaced it: cooling by evaporation followed, like putting a wet towel over your head. So so refreshing! !

  9. I was living in Spain each time I lost my hair through chemo, as I lived a fairly isolated life out there I just used bandanas mainly to cover my head from the sun. One tip though that a lady I knew out there gave me. Put a panty liner between your wig cap and scalp, sticky side towards your wig. You’ll be surprised how much moisture it absorbs.

  10. Daft idea, but it might help someone. Why not keep your wig caps in the fridge when its hot! Just pop it on under your wig when you know you have to go out and about. If you have a fridge at work you could pop one in it and get a cap change at break time, then replace it with the cap that has turned warm. Nobody will know. Just put the cap in a small lunchbox ! Or you could store a cold wig cap in a small cool bag that kids use to take their sandwiches to school.

  11. Hi Lizzie
We were on holiday in the Lake District when the hot weather hit. I had to abandon my wig when walking and just wore a headscarf and sun hat during the day when out and about. It was really good to be able to put my hair back on in the evening!

Normally I wear a cotton or bamboo wig cap because my scalp is super sensitive and this does help prevent some of the sweat trickling down into my eyes. I have an aging wig that is just about long enough to pin up at the back to keep my neck cool. The other thing I have found is to keep as much hair off my forehead as possible – no fringes.

  12. Thanks Lizzie, I feel better about airport security now. At the end of the day I’m sure they wouldn’t insist you take the wig off right there and then infront of everyone! Will definitely try it out this summer.

To keep cool in the summer I bought a broad material hairband (to hide my thinning on top) I then stitched a fringe to the front of it to soften the look ( I uded the hair from a ponytail hairpiece that I bought a few years ago that I didn’t use to make the fringe). I tie my own hair back in a ponytail It works great! I know Simply Wigs sell them if you’re not wanting to make your own.

Thanks for your help Lizzie x
