One of the best ways to minimize currency exchange fees is to visit your bank or credit union before you leave the U.S. to exchange dollars for the currency of your destination.
Local banks and credit unions usually offer the best rates. Major banks, such as Chase or Bank of America, often offer the added benefit of having ATMs overseas. Online peer-to-peer foreign currency exchanges. Online bureaus or currency converters, such as Travelex, provide convenient foreign exchange services.
If possible, consider withdrawing cash abroad as needed from ATMs. Because they're owned by banks, ATMs usually offer the most current exchange rate and feature fees that are lower than an airport or currency exchange. Remember that withdrawing from an ATM can often come with the standard $2-$5 usage fee.
Though there may be a small fee if you exchange less than a certain amount, your bank or credit union will almost always be the cheapest place to exchange currency. You may be able to order currency at a branch location, by phone, or online to have it delivered to you or to pick up at a branch.
With time at your disposal, you'll be able to see exactly what the fee and rate is, and how many euros you'll get for your dollars. It's possible of course that you might get a better deal when you land in Europe. It may well be the case that fees are lower and exchange rates better.
Order via U.S. Bank Online Banking: Log in to your account. Select the account you'd like to use to purchase the foreign currency. Choose Account services, then select Foreign currency.
Can I still go directly to my financial center and meet with an associate without making an appointment? Yes, you can visit a financial center without an appointment. Appointments are a time-saving benefit available to you.
