Remove grease, oil and other surface contaminants by cleaning with appropriate detergents (something like Rust-Oleum Mathys ND14 Cleaner Degreaser is ideal). Then remove rust scale, loose mill scale, loose rust and loose coatings by scraping, wire brushing and sanding.

Often the instructions say to remove rust scale and as much loose rust as you can brush away with a wire brush or coarse 60-grit sandpaper. You can use a wire wheel on a spinning electric grinder to make this work go very fast.

Look on most paint tech data sheets suggest “shot blast to SA 2.5”, or “mechanically abrade the surface”. This is recommended as it is ideal for removing rust, clearing the surface of any contaminants and providing a “keyed” surface or rough surface for the paint to be applied onto.

Step 2: If loose rust or other loose materials are present such as a previous coating, remove using a mechanical method such as a wire brushes, sanding blocks, sanding wheels, stiff bristle brushes, paint scrapers and putty knives. You will know when a surface is clean when only adherent material remains.

To tackle items with significant corrosion, submerge your rusty tools or knives in a bowl of white vinegar and let them sit overnight or as long as 24 hours. Once they have had a good soak, remove them from the vinegar and scrub the rust off with steel wool, a scouring pad, or a wire brush.

Clean the metal and let it dry.

The metal might look and feel clean, but any grease, oil, dirt, or rust left on there will prevent the paint from properly adhering to the surface. Avoid using water to clean metal; instead, use a solvent such as acetone. It will dry quickly and leave a clean surface.

After the Rust Converter has completely dry, it is recommended to wipe the surface with a damp cloth to remove all excess Rust Converter before you apply the oil-based paint.

But can you paint over a rust inhibitor? The answer is yes – with some considerations. It is important to note that not all rust inhibitors convert rust into a primer finish.

Applying vinegar to rust dissolves the oxide and leaves behind a water-soluble salt that you can remove easily. It is called neutralisation, and this reaction happens between rust and acetic acid, which is why cleaning vinegar helps remove iron oxides from household surfaces and objects.

Whenever possible, it is always best to sand off the rust and expose only bare, unrusted metal for painting. But it is possible to paint directly on top of the rust, as long as the surface is stable. This paint should always be laid on top of a primer designed for metal.

Paint Doesn't Stop the Spread

Rusting results from a chemical reaction between metal, oxygen, and moisture, which we will explain further in the next section. Painting over rust does not halt this process. It can, instead, actually trap moisture and oxygen beneath the paint, hastening rust formation!
