What is the best adhesive for drywall? ›

Choosing the right glue for drywall

Drywall Adhesive (otherwise known as Bonding Compound) is an essential component in the installation of both standard and insulated plasterboard. It serves to bond boards directly to the wall in a process known as "dot and dab".

As it dries out, it will start to bend or warp a little bit and a lot of the reason drywall adhesive is used is to prevent screw pops. So screw pop happen whenever the wood is drying and starts to bend or warp and it wants to separate from the drywall that has been screwed on.

Some adhesives are permanent, and some are temporary/removable. Permanent glue will damage your wall, whereas removable glue will not leave a residue and should leave your wall damage free.

The dabs should be applied between 10mm and 25mm thick and sufficient for the fixing of one board at a time. After dabbing out and before the dabs have set, offer up the plasterboard and press firmly into place, aligning the board so that it is plumb.

Clean the surface to be bonded, ensuring it is free from dust and debris. Apply the adhesive evenly to the surface using a trowel or a suitable applicator. Press the plasterboard firmly onto the adhesive, ensuring full contact.

Liquid Nails Heavy Duty, for example, dries to a strength of 150 psi in 24 hours but takes a week to reach its peak shear strength of 240 psi. It dries in 15 minutes and you should expect it to cure within seven days. Though, the drying time varies with humidity and temperature.

Nails and screws are not made for walls such as drywall, paneling and tile. They can easily slip out of these walls without the additional reinforcement that an anchor provides. There are many varieties of drywall anchors that keep hanging hardware firmly in place.
