How to renew your driving licence

It will cost you a total of £21.50 (including DVLA fees) to renew your driving licence.

  1. Bring your photocard driving licence and your renewal reminder

If you don’t have your renewal reminder, we can still process your renewal with just your photocard driving licence, providing none of your details have changed.

Please check with your local branch if you need to book an appointment to complete your application there.

  2. We’ll take your photo

We’ll also capture your signature and even submit a change of address if applicable.

  3. Pay for it

The DVLA charges £17 to renew your driving licence. We’ll just charge a further £4.50 to take your photo, check your application and send it securely to the DVLA. That’s a total of £21.50.

  4. Send it

We’ll send off your application electronically, and you should have your new licence within 3 weeks. We’ll also take your old driving licence and send it back to the DVLA for you.

How to renew if you’re over 70 years old

Once you’re 70 you’ll need to renew your drivinglicence every 3 years. The DVLA will automatically sendyou a D46P application form 90 days before yourlicence expires. But if you haven’t got one, you can alsouse a D1 form which you'll find in selected Post Office branches.

    Common driving licence questions

    • Your photocard must be renewed every 10 years, up to the age of 70. It’s illegal to drive without a valid licence and, if you’re caught driving without one:

      • You can be fined up to £1,000 if you’re stopped by police
      • You may face difficulties with car insurance
      • You may be breaking local laws when driving abroad
      • Car hire firms may refuse to provide you with a vehicle

It’s important that licences are updated every 10 years – having an up-to-date licence will mean you have the latest security features to protect you against fraud. This will also help prevent driving licence impersonation – stopping disqualified and dangerous drivers taking to the road.

    • Check the expiry date on your photocard.

Each section on your card is numbered:

      • 1-3 represent your family name, given names and date of birth
      • Section 4b represents the expiry date of the card
      • You should receive a D798 renewal notification through the post two months before your licence expires
      • Take this form to one of over 1100 Post Office branches and renew your licence there or go online at DVLA
      • For just £4.50, selected Post Office branches can take your photo to DVLA standards, check through your application, and send it securely to DVLA
      • If your name or title has changed then you will need to apply direct to DVLA online or via a D1 ‘Application for a driving licence’ form by post
    • You can change your photo and/or your address using the Post Office service, however any other changes such as name or gender change would need to be done directly with the DVLA.
