Tequila is a Mexican distilled alcoholic beverage. It is made from the blue agave plant which is mostly harvested in the area bordering the city of Tequila. Tequila must have an ABV of between 35 & 55%

But does tequila freeze? The simple answer is that due to the high alcohol content of tequila, it can be frozen, but it will not freeze solid. Unlike beer and wine which has a lower alcohol content with added water, which will freeze solid. Beer is likely to explode in your freezer.

You also must consider that your home freezer does not have freezing degrees such as commercial fridges.

Temperatures for frozen liquor are between -100 to 170 degrees Fahrenheit. The freezing point for water is -32 degrees Fahrenheit. A 15% ABV will freeze, while a 30% ABV will freeze, but not solid.

Should you keep your Tequila in a freezer?

True Tequila fans do not freeze their tequila. The freezing process tends to disguise the aroma of tequila. They believe drinking tequila at room temperature enables the drinker to appreciate the true aroma and flavors of the tequila.

Beverages with a high alcohol content do not need freezing or refrigeration. A cold room temperature is an ideal way to store these beverages. Freezing Tequila changes the viscosity of the liquor, making it more semi-fluid in consistency.

What effect does freezing tequila have on the product?

While it is not advised to freeze a high-end tequila brand because it would mask the flavors and aromas, cheaper brands may be frozen if that is your preference. Storing cheaper brands in the fridge or freezer may prolong the lifespan.

If your Tequila freezes there is a high possibility that it has been contaminated with water.

When drinking an alcoholic beverage that has been chilled, it could numb the pallet, which results in you not being able to enjoy the full flavors and aromas.

Chilling tequila will make it more palatable, but it distracts from the aroma and flavor of the product.

Traditional ways of enjoying Tequila

In Mexico tequila is enjoyed without salt and lime or lemon. It is very popular to enjoy tequila with a side of Sangrita. Sangrita is made from orange and tomato juice with hot chili. One is consumed by sipping one part tequila, followed by one-part Sangrita.

Another way to enjoy tequila is a Bandera. This consist of 3 tequila glasses. The glasses are filled with tequila, sangrita, and lime juice. This resembles the Mexican flag.

Salt is put on the moistened hand, it is licked off, the tequila is downed and then you suck on the lemon. This is commonly known as a tequila slammer.

In some European countries, Tequila is enjoyed with cinnamon on a slice of Orange.

Tequila can also be enjoyed in a variety of co*cktails. A margarita is one of the most popular varieties. This could either be frozen or stirred.

What is the shelf-life of Tequila?

An unopened bottle of tequila can last for a very long time if it is stored in a cool dark environment. Once opened it is advisable to drink within a year. Ensure that the smell and the aroma of the tequila are still in a good condition.

Does Tequila Freeze – Conclusion

Tequila is a highly versatile drink that can be enjoyed in many ways. It is not advisable to freeze a high-end tequila as you will deprive yourself of the rich aromas and flavors.
